James Franklin is supposedly....

Munchak might could be a better coach than Jimmy Frank in the collegiate ranks, but I don't see how anyone can look at the two and say that Munchak is a better fit other than he is a PSU alum. Frank has a much better personality and fit for the college game than Munchak. Munchak is a complete bore. I would literally almost fall asleep listening to his postgame comments. Can you imagine him trying to recruit vs a high energy guy like Frank? Frank beats him hands down. Munchak would be a fish out of water in the college game in my opinion. Recruiting is the life blood of a college head coach. Frank has already shown he can do it at Vandy. He'd do much better at PSU. No one knows how Munchak would do, but if his personality is any indication, he'd bore families to death in the living room.

Munchak: "I'm an NFL hall of famer. Want to be one too?"

Jimmy Frank: (after the recruit commits to the arch-rival) "You had a chance! You could have had the honor of the academic and athletic tradition offered nowhere else but PSU, and you missed it! You hear me?! You missed it! You just can't help some people... My God!!! We have the hottest coches' wives in the nation! And you missed it!!!!!!! You hear me punk?! You'll never be nothin'! Nothin'!"

Most of the kids he is recruiting wouldn't even know who he was unless someone filled them in. You think they remember a guy that played that long ago? Doubtful. He's not that good of a pro coach. He went from an O-line coach to a head coaching position. He had not even been a coordinator before Bud went the cheap route and hired him. I have some serious doubts if he'd be a good college coach either.

Ha...I'm not wasting my time signing up for a Vandy website. I just want to observe the train wreck

You don't have to have an account to read the butt hurt. It's comical and entertaining. I haven't seen this much sobbing since Old Yeller died and Franklin hasn't even left yet.

Even if he is a front runner for Penn State, I wouldn't be surprised if him and the other handful of coaches mentioned aren't picked and it's someone else entirely.

On the one hand, Penn State is clearly and upgrade from Vandy even if it isn't in the SEC. 9-4, maybe 10-3 are about as good as it could get with Vandy(Even Kentucky won 11 once).

On the other hand, while the worst is past, Penn State is still looking at dealing with the fallout from NCAA and Big Ten sactions put on them in 2012. No championship or bowl bid chances for at least a couple more years, assuming anything else comes up.

While Franklin himself may be in the clear, and is a good coach(but still a prick) if I where the AD at Penn State I would be somewhat hesitant to hire him, at least this time around.

Even with only two more years of a post season ban, they're still on probation for at least one more year afterwards. It would be embarrassing and possibly crippling to Penn State(more crippling than where they already are) to get past the sex scandal penalties only to be handed down the NCAA death penalty for some lesser violation.

Remember last year around this time he squashed any rumors of him leaving by addressing it and talking about how he was committed to the program and recruits. This year, with the speculation about 5 times worse than last year, he hasn't said a peep.

So he's either about to jump ship or at least he's making it clear he will leave as soon as a better gig offers, or behind the scenes he's using all this to get all he wants out of Vandy.

That's not uncommon. His stock isn't going to get any higher than it is at this moment.

His best bet would be to leave Vandy. Long-term success is virtually impossible at Vandy.

What more can Vandy do? I mean there are a very few that want a new stadium. But with their attendance problems there is no way to justify it. And since their campus is completely surrounded by downtown Nashville they don't have room to build another without tearing down their existing one leaving them without a field for a season or two.

They couldn't even build a bigger stadium on the spot of the existing one. It's practically surrounded. There isn't enough room for the support structures required to build an upper deck. Heck, the school doesn't even own the land that would be needed to close in the East endzone.

He's gone on the first thing smoking out of Nashville. He's hurting his recruiting too much not to, how many kids are going to want to go through the will he/won't he be here every year of their college career?

Does anyone else feel like Vandy cannot afford Franklin and his staff anymore? How many tickets/concessions do you have to sell when he is being paid over 3.5 million now? I can't see their football program is producing enough revenue in a 30,000 seat stadium. Just my thoughts.

They could afford to pay their coaches quite a bit more thanks to the revenue they get simply for being in the SEC.

The thing is.. If he announces he's staying.. Vandy fans will celebrate like it's the 2nd coming of Christ. But all that it means is that they temporarily have him for another year until it happens all over again. If I'm a recruit there's no chance I go there, because there's no chance he'd be there all 4 of my years.

Every coach in the country can use all his interviewing to negatively recruit Vanderbilt as long as he's there. He has no intention of being there much longer. You don't interview for every open position in football without intentions to leave soon.

Why does it matter what he does? Their 9-4 team just beat our 5-7 team by 4 points on a last minute touchdown. Vandy has the #33 ranked recruiting class while we are solidly in the top 10 and we are sweeping the in state talent this year. Malone, Hurd and Gaulden never even considered Vandy and they are in Franklin's backyard. Vandy's success is not sustainable regardless of who their coach is. I personally hope he stays so we can extract some revenge down the road. I wish everyone on this board shared that sentiment.

I agree. I hope he sticks around a few more years so we can beat him a few more times before he leaves. Coach Franklin has done good things at Vandy, and it is kind of fun to have an in-state rivalry. But Tennessee is on the rise under Coach Jones, while Vandy will likely drop no matter who coaches them. So please stay at Vandy James Franklin--I'd love to watch as your legacy slowly goes down the drain in the next few years!

Between the 2 Franklin related topics on this one forum, there are over 20k views. I suspect by morning there will be more views on a Tennessee Volunteer site about a Vanderbilt Coach, than there were unique visitors at home Vanderbilt football games this year.
