Jim Tressel (merged)

I don't understand some of this fanbase. We give people like Pearl and Kiffin hell for lying and breaking the rules, then someone turns right around and wants to hire people who have lied and broken the rules.

I would welcome back Pearl and Kiffin as coaches, actually firing Pearl was really dumb.

Wow. That is quite possibly the craziest thing I've ever read on this site...and I actually read the stupid Gruden Cliff Notes several times.

Then you sir, are destined to where you're at. I would take Pearl back because he is the best basketball coach we have ever had. Kiffin, well he could have won and competed, he's the best one we've had since Fulmer. So keep reading the cliff notes, I guess. But you can send me a message if you would ever like to come back to reality.

seems to me like a better investment than other choices.

That's something else that needs to be discussed as well. I bet, much like Petrino, you could almost dictate contractual terms to Tressel. Maybe around $2 million a year with a small buyout, if any. So if it doesn't work out, what have you lost? As I have stated before, I actually think there is less risk with him having possible NCAA issues than a lot of coaches because of the NCAA microscope that will be on him and the program.

Also, this argument about next season being ruined is weak. Next season will truly be "year 0" again and we are building this program for the long term not one season where at best we probably go 7-5. He may be the most proven winner who is available out there guys.

well put!

I have been on the Tressel band wagon since the firing. Gruden is immediately "The Man" when any coaching position becomes available. Truth B HE IS AN NFL guy! Tressel had Ohio State in the National Championship picture every year. Maybe some additional sanctions come with him, but face the facts. Our program is in shambles. Kiffin and Dooley ruined us. It will take any coach at least 3 years to recruit and rebuild our program where it is now. The price we would pay for hiring Tressel is much less than the price we would pay with a hire that is not one of the "Elite" Coaches in College Football. How many Coaches can you name that are top 10 Coaches that would leave their programs and come to UT. We HAVE to get someone that can compete with Saban, Spurrier, Muschamp, Reicht, Miles. As of now we are a "little sister" to most SEC Schools. Get Tressel!!!!!

I still like him in the mix but I honestly believe Hart will look for someone "pure as the wind driven snow"...no NCAA baggage first and forehand. Real shame since his recors speaks for itself and also he's only been with two colleges as HC; Youngstown and Ohio St.Both times over ten year so he doesn't like to move on anytime soon.

I could understand if Tressel had recruiting violations, took money, made payouts, bribes, etc...but we're talking about the worst of the worst....Free Tattoos!!

It's a pitty that Tressel is being held under for something like that. Granted it was wrong but compared to what and whom? Everyone wants a winner and good coach that's fit for UT but so far everyone is either griping about something, someone or the fact there's a snowball's chance in hades of us getting them.

We're facing dire times at UT and cannot afford another three year experiment. And face it; it's going to take a good one to two years before we see some improvement. Even Saban had a rough first year at Bama. We need a winner and proven one at that and Tressel would like a chance to redeem himself and have a second chance. You look at his history and he doesn't like to move from one place to another so Long Term is what we need.

Let it go...you cannot sell Tressel or Petrino to the fans. Guarantee a winning season would change their minds, but we could never get to that point. Move on....

I agree, Tressel only down fall was over tattoos, who care's he paid his fine, he would be great at for us. the first year with any new coach is a re-building year, so the show cause 5 game out and no bowl i can live with it... Tressel track record is better that Fisher, Strong, 229 wins or so....hell yeah

Precisely. Tressel's transgressions are absolutely miniscule compared with those of Charlie Pell's at Florida in the 1980s:

"After the 1982 season, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) began an investigation into possible rule violations by Pell and his staff at Florida. Pell took full responsibility for the violations in August 1984 and announced he would resign at the end of the season. However, on September 16, only three games into the season, the NCAA announced that Florida was alleged to have committed 107 major infractions--including spying on other teams' practices, payments and gifts to players, and allowing walk-ons to stay in the athletic dorm. That night, university president Marshall Criser fired Pell and named his offensive coordinator, Galen Hall, as interim coach. Hall and the 1984 Gators won Florida's first-ever Southeastern Conference (SEC) football championship, but the SEC university presidents voted to vacate the Gators' 1984 SEC title after the season was over. In January 1985, after it was ultimately determined that Pell and the Gators coaching staff had actually committed fifty-nine infractions, the NCAA placed Florida on two years' probation and banned the Gators from bowl games and live television in 1985 and 1986. The NCAA also reduced the Gators' football scholarships by twenty over three years. The loss of scholarships proved to be the most crippling sanction in the long-term; with a depleted roster, the Gators did not win more than seven games from 1986 to 1989" (Charley Pell - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia ).

If that's a requirement now then...

Has Gundy?
Has Al Golden?
Has Jimbo Fisher?
Has Fedora?
Has Strong as a HC?

One thing he does have than none of them have is a NC as a HC. I think he also has the first 14-0 season ever. Do you know Tressel has more wins as a HC than those five combnined?

To answer the second part of your question first, no. Fulmer's '95 team beat the Eddie George-led Buckeyes in the Citrus Bowl 20-14.

As for the first question, here is Ohio State's complete record vs. SEC competition during Tressel's tenure (2001-2010):

2001 L South Carolina (Outback Bowl) 28-31
2006 L Florida (BCS Championship Game) 14-41
2007 L LSU (BCS Championship Game) 24-38
2010 W Arkansas (Sugar Bowl) 31-26 (Ohio State Historical Scores ).

Arkansas finished the 2010 season 10-3, so they were undoubtedly ranked, although I am uncertain as to their precise ranking before or after the bowl game. Incidentally, Ohio State's victory in this game was later vacated as a result of NCAA sanctions against the program ( Arkansas Razorbacks football - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)

good research!

Yes...It would...It would also be embarrassing to UT to hire a guy with that shady of a past with the NCAA.

I dont buy this. What he did was not that horrible to me and its not like a Petrino situation where it's gone on at different schools. Id take Tressel in a heartbeat.
