What a foul git you are.

Weird story, I saw Jimmy Carter at a flea market in Murphy, NC when I was a kid. He'd been out of office just a few years.

I saw several dudes walking around with wires coming out of their ears going into their blazers and they were forming a circle around someone. Then I saw Jimmy and his wife, they were buying an axe handle.

Jimmy Carter represents a type of Democrat that no longer exists. Christian, loving husband, and a true patriot. He was objectively an awful president, but he loved America and never intentionally tried to do it harm. America could use more Democrats like him.- C Kirk

No. It's subjective. The big government types have fooled everyone into thinking Carter was "objectively" bad. That's what they do. They did it to Harding, Coolidge, etc. They did it to Carter.

Were you even alive during Carter's time in Office?

No. Nor was I for Harding or Coolidge ; )

Sometimes people who lived it are too close to it.* Things were not good during Carter's admin, partly because of his mistakes but mostly because of what he inherited. I was alive in the aftermath, and he was a big reason why the aftermath was so freaking good.

*like right now, people blame Biden for inflation and pine for Trump when Trump caused inflation...we just didn't feel it while he was in office.

I also wasn't born yet during his presidency. It is always interesting to listen to opinions of people that lived through his time in office though. My Dad at the time was a staunch Democrat just like my Papaw but both had different takes on Carter. My Dad said he was horrible while my Papaw thought the world of him as POTUS. The majority however do agree that he was a good person with great character.

My Dad lived it. He had just converted to the right a few years before. He has nothing but jokes about Carter.

He was here visiting me for Thanksgiving and was patting Reagan on the back because Volcker was his Fed chairman (and Volcker is given a lot of credit for the boom of the 80's) and I had to remind him that Carter appointed Volcker, Reagan just kept him.

That's how things go for Carter. The good is completely ignored.

Wilson gave us the income tax and the federal reserve, so by definition he was an awful president. Not to mention that little thing called WW1 that he got us into.

Carter was just a weak leader, he did some good things like deregulation of the trucking and airline industry among a few others and yes that set the stage for Regan.

Carter’s downfall was his weakness in foreign policy, he was an absolute disaster in that part of the job.

I’m willing to concede it is a matter of opinion. Which obviously is subjective.

I didn’t live through his Presidency so my feelings aren’t as strong as some others may be. I do think democrats like him are nearly extinct. The same can be said for Bill Clinton. Maybe the democrats come back toward the middle. But if they are serious about Newsom in 2028, that will signal they are just gonna double down on this destructive agenda.

I'm losing my marbles. I did not mean to say Wilson, who is actually not considered a bad president, but should be. I meant to say Coolidge

Political leanings have a lot to do with historian rankings. Coolidge should be in the top 15 if not top 10 presidents.

Historians do two things in presidential rankings...they (1) champion big government and (2) reward a POTUS for facing a disaster.

So they don't like Coolidge's politics of restrained government, and they're bored by the fact that he didn't face a disaster. Ironically, he would've faced a disaster if his politics were different. We experienced a horrible stock market crash on his watch, he had a laissez faire approach, and we bounced back within a year. Had he made the crash into a depression with bad policies, historians would probably love him.

But you didn't have to live it to have a good understanding. Yes, people who lived it have experience that you and I didn't, but that's not the whole picture, and people tend to falsely make it the whole picture. Like you said, their feelings are "strong" and that crowds out proper analysis.

And as for Democrats like him being extinct...I would say politicians like him are basically extinct.

I'm good friends with a family that I'll just say was very connected to the Carter presidency. It was a different time in politics, that's for sure. I wasn't alive at that point, but I've never heard anyone say anything negative about Carter the person. Worst I've heard was "good man but terrible president". Maybe he's like the opposite of Bill Clinton, who I think was a pretty good president and an objectively bad person.
