JJJ and Julian going through draft process

Jonathan Givony has Phillips going #53, overall (out of 58 picks) to the T-Wolves.

I know he wants to play in the NBA and that’s the dream, but I still think it was a poor decision for him to go all-in this Spring. Feels like he’s going to withdraw and end up transferring if that’s the best his mocks end up looking like. Which sucks because I’ll hate watching him tear it up for another school.

It’ll have to be a lower tier conference because he can’t handle the physicality of the SEC.

Any other school in the SEC with an open spot will give him a shot. In fact, UK would be a great fit for him with all of their current openings and unsettled positions. So would Bama. There isn't a single SEC school that would turn him down.

There isn’t a single school in general that would turn him down, but correct me if I’m wrong, he missed the May 1st internal SEC date to transfer within the conference, right? It would sting far less to see him play in another conference. If he’s suiting up next season for Auburn, Alabama, Arkansas, etc. I’m going to be slightly annoyed we didn’t leave Gainey’s spot open for Phillips on the off chance his draft stock went sideways.

Lmao doesn't it get tiring being so dramatic all the time?

Damn, do you have a thorn up your a$$ all the time?

How many times did we watch him get knocked off his dribble nor miss wide open shots?

He simply couldn’t bully anyone and unless he puts on 20 pounds of muscle, he’s going to have a hard time handling the physicality of the SEC.

You're mistaking a sense of objectivity with a thorny ass. Your post in this thread, along with a lot of your others, is emotional drivel. I doubt I'm going to change your mind on any topic we disagree on, but I will point out your silliness. I don't think anyone disagrees that Phillips's physical weakness is glaring, but that is a far cry from declaring he would not be effective in the SEC. Maybe he transfers out and fails, maybe he transfers out and tears it up in a mid-major conference, maybe he transfers to a P5 team and tears it up. We all better hope, however, that he stays in the draft and gets selected. Any other outcome is not going help us in any way, imo.

It’s difficult to argue with people’s perceptions about Phillips based on his season here. I saw him play live in high school a few times. I saw him practice with our squad last Summer, and had (oft stated) high hopes. Similarly, I watched DeAndre Hunter live in high school, and then through his time in college, and now in the NBA. They have very similar bodies, skills and are each guard/forward tweeners with great defensive footwork. As a HS senior, Phillips game was significantly more developed than Hunter’s. During practices last year and even early in the season, he showed quite a bit of promise at both ends of the court. In November he started get a series of recurring hand and wrist injuries, and later had a nagging hip pointer for the rest of the year. As teams packed in and guarded Santi as a defensive plan, his operating space tightened, and he drew doubles when he got the ball. All of this led to a decline in his offensive output over the season. He was a good teammate, disciplined player, and played hard. His injuries contributed both to his inability to hold the ball in traffic, and his reluctance to drive or rebound in a crowd. He continued to play great defense all season. As to what could have been, Hunter came in with the same frame, but redshirted, then played twenty minutes a game the next season as he got stronger, and ultimately became a dominant player in his third year on a NC team, and was picked 4th in the draft. It’s never apples to apples, but Hunter looked more like a baby giraffe than Phillips at 18. Phillips is a very good player, with a serious upside. He also remains in contact with CRB and the team. I’ve heard he’s leaning toward staying in the draft regardless of the projections based on feedback he’s gotten from meetings. Rest assured that we’d make a spot for him, as would anyone else in the NCAA. He had a disappointing season. He had lots of challenges. He’s not done growing into his body or his skills. As with every instance of potential, there’s a downside too, obviously. If someone develops him smartly, there’s a strong comp in Hunter for where he could end up. I’ll keep rooting for him.

Would say your man Barnes didn't do a good job with him then

Kentucky reaches out to Tennessee star transfer Julian Phillips

Likelihood of this happening is miniscule but intriguing to say the least. Also... there's at least 24 schools that have reached out to him since entering the portal which is also wild.

He was a freshman. It's conceivable that his game will develope and he will get stronger. Only about 99% of players tend to do that.
