JJJ and Julian going through draft process

With Santi coming back and us taking 3 transfers, would we even have room for these guys if they decided to come back? I think Phillips is gone and will get drafted, but what about JJJ?

Ready for NBA? That question matters this much 🤏 to the NBA GM's that make draft decisions.

Do they have what it takes for our organization to turn them into a good NBA player? This question carries almost all the weight for NBA GM's.

So, no, your personal opinion about how it should work is not valid. There will be MULTIPLE players drafted in the 1st Round this draft that are mist certainly not ready for the NBA. Some of them will even develop into very good NBA players at some point. As a UT fan we would obviously rather them do that development while staying at UT another season. But to bury our head in the sand and act like it's a dumb decision for him like we know better than him about the draft process in ignorant.
NBA teams aren't investing multiple years into developing players. If you don't make the roster out of camp you end up on a two way deal in the G League. Even if you do make the roster, if you don't make the rotation you're more valuable as a trade piece. Something like 4 or 5 of the second round picks from 2019 are on NBA rosters today. I think only Terrance Mann and Nic Claxton play for the teams that drafted them.

If Phillips gets drafted he is G league bound for the foreseeable future. He has trouble with good defense on him, he has to be stronger with the ball in his hands. He has trouble holding on to the basketball in a lot of situations. He has upside but he isn’t going straight to the nba anytime soon. GBO

It’s set unless 1 of those guys decides to return and walk on
I do not see Phillips doing that ... but I could see JJJ doing that under some circumstances ... not saying that I think that is the way it is going to go .... just saying that I see the potential of that playing out.

I could see him being a GA before walking on if he doesn’t get drafted and wants to stay local. I don’t think either of them would even be eligible to walk on. Don’t they have rules about that?

Maybe he could pull a Pete Rose and be a player / coach if they write a big enough NIL check?

Guys. None of our current commits/signees are walking on. It is a complete fantasy to suggest anyone is moving from scholarship to walk on.

I’m not an insider to the financial workings of the basketball program, but in today’s NIL world it’s not a “fantasy” that a coach’s son might not be on scholarship. We all know Alan Houston was a walk on so there is a precedent.

Yes. But, BTO is one of the original people who hinted that Gainey might walk-on and he is now suggesting the roster is set. Seems like things have changed and Gainey is 100% on scholly. The door is closed for Phillips sadly. He’s gone, as much as we hate to think it.

What we advertise vs what we do are two different things. Gainey is a brand, a commodity, and a kid with a future. You can bet we’ll do everything to protect that, except sacrifice a chance to win more. His dad would tell you the same thing. There was a contingency plan for Gainey’s spot and a way to communicate about it. That plan would shine the best light on Gainey, if it had happened. The need for that has disappeared as circumstances have solidified. I would never ever say “the door is shut” on a player of Phillip’s potential, but we are proceeding with a roster plan that doesn’t include him returning. That much is true.

And now you know what I meant.

No…he signed a guaranteed deal for $5 million. How do folks not get this?

If he had stayed and improved his draft position, wouldn't he have a bigger guaranteed deal right now? Maybe that's the point he was trying to make

His size was his issue- not improving his ability. Plus, even if he moved up to the end of the first round, he wasn’t guaranteed much more, if at all. First round contracts are guaranteed for 2 years with the 3rd and 4th years being team options. In hindsight, KC made the correct decision.

Correct take

You guys are In Lala land just because of this narrative of JP being a lottery pixlck even though there's no fruits of that
You were on here trying to make the same points last week.

Repeating the same silly nonsense over and over doesn't make you more believable.
