Joe Paterno is dead.

Actually it's not ridiculous at all. I'm sure people who are trying to defend him for what he did (or didn't do) would feel a lot different if it had been their children being molested and he did nothing about it.

Nobody is defending him. Why is it weird that those close to him are sad?

Why is it weird to think his death came a lot faster due to the guilt, stress and depression this caused?

You don't have to feel sad for the guy, but it's not weird people do.

Why? Why is it ridiculous? I'm glad this enabler is dead.

Because it's obvious that it would strike a nerve more if it's your kin.

Just like if some cute blonde girl goes missing in Aruba it's all over the news, but its a black kid in the inner city it's never even mentioned.

The people close to him should feel sad. I'm talking about the casual fan who is "sad" and "defending" him. Reading different comments on the internet and on my facebook, there are a lot of people defending him and saying he did nothing wrong at all. Basically because he was Penn State was 85

Or a white kid in the inner city for that matter.

He didn't do enough, and he acknowledged that. I don't think he is the monster some have painted him though. We now have the benefit of hindsight.

I had a good friend accused of rape not long ago. Had to make a statement to police etc. I defended him and told the truth about his character and what little I knew of the situation. Do I really know what happened? Of course not, but I believe my friend wouldn't do that.

If it comes out years later the guy is actually a serial rapist will I feel guilty? Of course, but u do what u feel is right at the time.

There seems to be a lot of support for him from those who watched him coach before he lost it. More so than people like me who remember him as a "coach" in title only.

The bold is my point. What if it were your kid?

I hate Joran Van Der Sloot because he is a murderer. Not because he killed my kid, but someones'. The reason I hate him is because it could've been my kid he preyed on.

If there is a hell, it was created for people like Jerry Sandusky and those who helped him.

What if one friend of yours told you he saw the other guy raping someone after you knew your rapist friend had heat on him from before for the same sort of thing?

Sandusky had a total of four grand juries convene for him. People knew there was smoke.

To your last point I agree, I just don't think Paterno intentionally helped him

Then my statement would have been different and he wouldn't be my friend.

It's sad all around. Noone is supporting him. I was his harshest critic in this deal. It doesn't prevent me from understanding that he did a lot of good for a lot of people, so I understand how this shocking downfall is tough for some people to comprehend. Maybe age gives one the ability to look at more than one angle.

Age gives one a curtain to hide behind. Because we all buy his argument that he didn't know one man could rape another.

I too know he tried to do a lot of good for people. But when it was convenient to bury his head he did just that. Won't matter how old I get, that wipes out anything else. Just because you remember him fondly doesn't mean his actions had any less detriment on those affected.

Paterno did what was necessary at the time to protect his name and his football program.

He is one of many that felt Penn State football was bigger than anything else. And he died for that belief.

Good riddance. Sat on his old ass while innocent children were being abused in the worst way. No sympathy at all for him.... I hope as he burns in hell that he is forced to think of those children.

Who is arguing the above satements? Except for the age curtain comment. Whatever. I haven't seen people defending him.
