Seriously, can we let this thread die until such time that Dooley is no longer the Head Football Coach at the University of Tennessee?

I know, wasting my time...

So, are you saying that with Gruden as head coach, Tennessee doesn't become more attractive to recruits than it's current state? I'm not sure where Saban became a part of this.

It may, its not a given. Saban became a part of this because he is still going to get who he wants, 99 pct of the time. Gruden brings star power, that's all we know of his ability to recruit.

When already operating at a loss, an extra 1.5 a year is quite a bit. Not to mention that's what, 3 mil more than we are paying Dooley? Either way, someone would have to fund that for a bit.

Spending 5 mil doesn't get you an automatic better hire, but 5 mil is what it would take to get Gruden here IMO. Why spend 5 when you can get a solid hire at 3.5? Probably even 3.

I said as much before.

Basically what you are saying is that even if you could hire your top target (by having to pay 5 mil) you skip over that for the "solid" guy because he is cheaper?

What is "solid" exactly?

If I had the choice between Gruden at 5 mil(who is unproven in college) and someone who has proved he can get it done in college for 3.5, I wouldn't take Gruden.

That's my opinion on Gruden. Now, for someone like Saban you would toss out the 5-5.5 mil to try and get. He has proven he has what it takes. I personally wouldn't spend 5 mil on Gruden just because of his name.

You are not a Grudenite yet. Gruden is the answer to Saban in the SEC.

Ah.

That makes more sense. Thats more of a personal preference on Gruden more so than just spending more money.

To get back to the elite stage in college football UT has to get outside the box IMO. You may can find that with a solid hire but thats not a given.

The transition from NFL to college doesn't bother me as much as the reverse of that.
If Gruden is interested and the money is there he's my coach.

If Dooley doesn't work out, there are coaches around the country who can win big at UT and will take the job. The AD needs to find these coaches and quit making easy hires of some "name" with connections.

I don't see why he can't do better than 6th in the SEC every year. That would be an upgrade from what we have now.
