Jon Gruden thread (merged)

I usually agree OB, but Gruden's name and NFL ties would recruit themselves.

Now, will a scowl, intensity and his NFL coaching tactics work at a college level with some 18 and 19 yr olds that have been told quitting and moving elsewhere is easier than working hard and waiting for dividends?

It might, then again, it might not. I could see success, but I could also see a thread in 3 years talking about how bad we still suck.

He might be an all world recruiter. It eventually will take more than his name to do it. We shall see IF genius hired.

I just think about the efforts Kiffin had to go through to draw attention to the program, helicopters, busses etc and we all thought his reputation would make recruiting easier. Granted he put together an outstanding class but then it disappeared down the line. Would that happen again, or would a guy like Gruden employ some better techniques to pull in the right guys?

Not obvious, you disagree with my opinion? Please elaborate, I'm not an expert.

Gruden wasn't fired from Oakland. He was traded. Davis wanted a more vertical passing game and hired Bill Callahan, and traded Gruden to Tampa Bay for picks. Gruden was doing a great job with the franchise. He was at two straight playoff appearances.

Good thing that would never happen with a below average WAC coach. That would suck.

You eat whats on your plate mayn, and we have Ramen noodles right now. Not the first time I've gone hungry.

Nothing I can do about it though. Complaining that DD sucks 100 times a day does nothing for me.

He also was as repsonsible for the team he beat in the Super Bowl, as Dungey was for the one that won it.

He is right! Gruden was one of those rare coaches who got "traded".

I wonder if Gruden has an orange dog to use for motovation?

Ok, call it how you see it. I'm not aware of too many coaches who have been traded, but I'll give him success at Oakland.

So, point #4: He was successful at Oakland under a very demanding owner.

YV, you can't compare Kiffins pedigree with Gruden. Most coaches still think Kiffin is a joke. That's not the case with Gruden. His knowledge of the game is hard to match. But it's college, and I don't think many people take into consideration what all is involved, and that pro coaches are used to dealing with pros, not kids.

Yeah, I agree. I was more thinking about the NFL coach recruiting angle, not necessarily the pedigree angle. But, you have to admit it was pretty exciting at the time, you know, before the mattresses and all.

Thanks, I've seen it.

So points 2, 3, 4, and 5:

2. He's got NFL Super Bowl winning coaching experience.
3. He runs football QB camps that are popular.
4. His hire would immediately bring energy and attention back to the football program.
5. His intensity level would make Saban's look like a mother from Little Miss Texas Beauty Pageant.

FYP

It would be my only concern with him. I think to combat this, I would hope he would hire a college OC.

Going from Derek Dooley to Jon Gruden would be the equivalent of dropping Janet Reno for Megan Fox. Just need to make sure that Megan is willing....

Would you be concerned with any of the restrictions surrounding recruiting and potential for violations simply due to lack of experience in that arena?

I support who is on the Hill. Have for 25+ years. That included Kiffin as well. Even from my heat exhaustion watching us quit at Ole Miss.

I've always been that way and it won't change. Doesnt mean I don't get pissed. Just means I support the football program and school, as many others claim to do.

I'm with you there, but when I see a thread build as fast as this one has I have to see why.

half the stuff on a thread like this is good discussion. The rest is guys starting an efight. I got called a dick by 5 posters on this board while I was asleep last night. Woke up and a tired mod had to do some cleaning up. It is what it is. Good discussions and differing opinions are awesome. Too bad there is not enough

Im sure UT will give him all the compliance aid he needs to cover ignorance.

Short of him knowing the rules and just not giving a rats azz I don't see a problem.
