Jon Gruden to Miami FL (merged)

Or if he can dumb down an offense enough for the practice time available.

I still think Gruden can be an excellent college coach though.
He'll have the ability to be an excellent recruiter, put together an excellent staff, and he'll do fine developing players, IMO. There may be some risk, but the ceiling for him is extremely high.

It's a little hard for me to see him being successful in college because of what he went through with quarterbacks in Tampa. He was constantly dissatisfied, he'd fall in and out of love with them like a high school girl, he'd come to camp with five QBs and not like any of them. And that was with professional quarterbacks whom he could sign to a long-term contract. Dealing with college kids and their constant turnover would require a significant change in the way Gruden approaches offense.

Per Miami Hearld:

Associates of ESPN's Jon Gruden, the former Super Bowl winning coach with Tampa Bay, say he would consider taking the UM football coaching job if he's approached. UM ideally would like to hire someone with several years of head coaching experience. Mark Richt has been mentioned among members of the Board of Trustees if he and Georgia part ways. UM must pay Shannon a buyout of between $1.5 million and $2 million for the final three years of his contract.

i don't think Miami is as desirable of a place to be as a lot of people think.....they aren't going to land a big name.

I wouldn't take it if I'm Mullen......not sure I would take it if I'm a guy like Charlie Strong either.

It suprises me that a school like Miami with a winning tradition has such sucky fan support. I watched the USF/Cane game and the lower bowl wasn't even half full. That's just pathetic.

...It won't take them long to find a coach...

It ain't gonna be as easy as you think. Facilities aren't that great, it's a low-paying job compared to the other top college programs and the stadium is half-empty for the majority of their games. Not the dream job most would expect.

It has two tremendous advantages...tradition and it's located in the most talent-laden area in the country.

The question is what's more valuable if you are a top coach and in demand...paragraph 1 or paragraph 2?

That's not really their fault. IIRC they don't play in the Orange Bowl anymore, they play WAY off of campus.

:dunno:

I'm no expert. Maybe they need a big time coach to put some new life into the program.

I didn't mean my comments to be criticisms...I've just lived in South Florida and have watched some of the greatest college football teams I have ever seen play for The U. And as the years have gone by since their last championship, the crowds have gotten smaller and smaller. I think there were even some empty seats when they played FSU this year!!!

They will make a pretty quick hire...but I'm betting it won't knock your socks off.
