Josh Dobbs about to have the Opportunity of his NFL Career

Something to consider regarding the fumble. That the arm moves forward is not sufficient, the QB must be "in control of the ball". An analogy would be the much more often seen issue of passes that are obviously "caught" in the sense they didn't hit the ground but the receiver failed to "maintain control".

Bit bewildered by a few that would seem this is some death knell for Dobbs. Fine, it was a far from perfect performance but honestly, I think most looking below the surface would agree the line play and near total predictability on first down limited the offense. It's not likely there's going to be a run of teams looking to make a starter of him but I can't imagine he did anything that walked his cred backwards.

It was obviously a pass. Silly to argue otherwise. I hate to think the league “fixed” the outcome, but the extremely quick review and refusal to overturn the missed call points to that conclusion. Motive? Simple. The Jags have an up and coming young quarterback and at least appear to be a team on the rise. A great, fresh story for the postseason. The Titans have endured a ton of injuries, lack star power (apart from Henry) and are clearly in a decline phase headed toward a total rebuild. Aikman and Buck might as well have explained all this to the viewing audience - it was clear enough from what they did say.
The ball isn't high enough for Dobbs to throw it. Watch the close up replay. He's still bringing it up and it's maybe forehead high when he gets hit.

Either his throwing mechanics suck or he's throwing a little flip pass, but neither of those is true. He got hit while raising the ball.

Why Joshua Dobbs' fumble in Titans-Jags sparked heated debate, and why officials made the right call

The Titans seem to come out of the gates gang busters and just lose the drive by mid season. Losing that many games in a row after starting off so good, you have to look at the coaching. Every team has injured players throughout the season. You deal with it ---get more players. The week they started the rookie qb against the Texans instead of playing Dobbs, told me the coaching has given up on the season.

The titans started losing because the injuries stacked up. Every team has injuries, but not like what the titans have. They have literally made nfl history with their injury numbers, a large portion of their roster is composed of practice squad players. You aren’t winning in the nfl like that. And you say you knew the titans coaches gave up on the season because they didn’t start dobbs against Houston makes zero sense. Dobbs wasn’t even a part of the team at that point. He was signed like a day or two before the Dallas game last week, so he’s started both games since signing with the Titans. Seems like your making stuff up 😂

The defender never touched the ball and Dobbs actually threw it roughly 15-20 yards precisely in the direction he was looking at the time. If this was a fumble, then it is a fumble every time the quarterback’s arm is hit in the process of throwing the ball.

Dobbs had the ball knocked loose and "propelled" it forward the way I can slap a balloon forward. That's not a throw. When he's hit and loses control, the ball is close to his hand so that and the motion of the hit make it go forward.

That's not a throw. That's a ball close to your hand that your slapped forward.

The ball was never touched. The arm was but the ball was not.

Watch but again. He never slapped it forward after it first left his hand. I specifically watched for that. Once it left his hand it was never contacted by another human being until the defender picked it up. It could only have been propelled those 15 yards or so on a line by the motion of his arm. Ever seen a loose ball knocked that far on that straight off a line? Heck the Immaculate Reception didn’t even travel that far and Jack Tatum knocked the hell out of the ball with his helmet.

That is a reasonable argument, but only if the underlying assumption was true. However, the ball did not pop free and then get batted forward by Dobbs’ hand. His hand was clearly in constant contact with the ball until he finally released it on the throw. Now was the throw perfect, or even decent? Of course not. It was a terrible throw because he got hit while he was throwing it. It happens probably 5 or 6 times in every NFL game and is almost never controversial. This forward pass should not have resulted in any controversy either.

I love Dobb's and want him to be a starting NFL QB. But no, that wasn't a pass. Yes his arm was moving forward, but the ball was obviously coming out before his arm was going forward. I absolutely hate it for him, but it happened. But that wasn't all his fault. The int was, it was a really bad decision. Hopefully he gets a shot next year, he just needs experience and game reps.

I can have a ball in cross in front of my palm and propel it forward because my arm is moving. That's still not a pass. I didn't have it my control.

Watch the video. The ball is not really in Dobbs' control when he moves it forward. You can't "spike" a ball or simply knock it forward and call it a pass.

That's a slap. He didn't have control of the ball TO make a pass. He just hit the ball.

Yeah, it starts to come loose when it's still at about his ear/forehead. He's not in control of the ball.

You can do the same thing. Start to throw a ball but let it go as you bring it up. You can still propel it forward (especially if you're an NFL QB, I bet) but Dobbs didn't throw that ball. He may have hit it with his hand but that's not a throw.

Exactly. The ball is jarred loose BEFORE it's all the way up. It's still very close to Dobbs hand, of course, and his motion and the hit make it go forward.

He's not in control. You can see it start to sort of wobble and by the time it's up, he's not really holding it and by the time it leaves it's clearly just being slapped or pushed forward by his motion.

That's not a throw. That's a slap forward.

I’m not convinced it was a fumble. Here’s a question: if a Titan’s player caught that ball after Dobbs released it, would it have been ruled a catch and receiving yards or do you think it would be ruled rushing yards after a fumble?

Hilarious people would think the NFL would want to rig a game for one of the worst markets in the NFL lol
The league is going to hype the next generation of allstar QB'S in the playoffs, led by Mahomes, Burrows and now Trevor Lawrence. It's good for the league's bottom line. They didn't want the Titans anywhere near the playoffs.

The league also cheated the Titans out of a win, earlier this season when they gave Mahomes 2 or 3 tries to make a 2 point conversion during that crummy Sunday night game.

Dobbs stats actually was better than TLs when combined passing and rushing and higher percentage completion. Imagine it would be very solid with more time in the offense and a healthy O-Line. Was he at fault on the fumble/pass? Perhaps not recognizing pressure but he did get blindsided and had very little protection. Prior game announcers were complimenting how quickly he got the ball out. Would love to see what he could do if given support around him. Time in actual games cannot be mimicked in practice and the more games under his belt think he would continue to improve.

Yep there is some “celebrity favoritism” for sure. TL was not that good at all and defense won the game. The overthrow in the end zone he made was an awful pass.

The Dobbs goes from Practice Squad to Playoffs story would've been great for the Playoffs. I was hoping for it.

There's no way the NFL gives a damn about Jacksonville and they'll be happy when Lawrence gets out of there.

Hilarious anyone can’t understand that the golden boy #1 overall draft pick, a former Super Bowl winning coach, and a rags to riches story make for much better playoff television ratings than a group of unknown injury replacements from an even smaller market team that hasn’t won a game since November. The business comparison is even more obvious than the missed call. Even if we assume the NFL had nothing to do with the decision to rush the “review,” we can still be absolutely certain that the business side of the house is thrilled to have the Jags in place of the Titans.

You are probably convinced the earth is flat too. The call was 100% correct and doubling down and babbling about a conspiracy to get jacksonville into the playoffs is even more ridiculous lol.

The league doesnt give a single **** about the Jacksonville franchise..............zip.

Yeah, Cousin Eddie, you would know more about it than I would. The NFL doesn’t hype its stars (or would be stars). It is all about pure, wholesome competition and the money (here’s a hint for you, ratings = money) doesn’t mean a thing. That cigar your are smoking in your ever so tasteful avatar must have some powerful stuff!

The league has all the teams and next gen QB's they wanted in the playoffs ( Lawrence, Burrows, *Mahomes, Jalen Hurts, Bills and Cowboys). No small coincidence that everyone in parentheses, beat the Titans this year.

*Mahomes needed assistance from the refs.
