Josh Pastner hired at Memphis (merged)

ahh the overwhelming optimism ive heard in memphis today, ... i guess only time will tell. Personally I dont know who this kid is and would not trust him with a program after one year after being an assistant. My question is, what about John Robick?

I really think Josh needs to add John to his staff, that would be a huge plus for him, but John has been with Cal for awhile now and I don't think he would leave Cal. Just my thoughts.

Have a buddy that played with Pastner at Zona. He had talked to Pastner early this morning and was told that there had yet to be any contact with Memphis since he left. He text him back between 1 and 2 to say that Memphis called and offered him on the phone.

From my buddy conversation, he also told me this....

Pastner has already "hired" Xavier Henry's father as Director of Basketball Ops. He has also "hired" a JUCO coach that has connections to the two JUCO signees. He expects to hire long time Olson assistant Jim Rosborough, who is currently an Asst. AD at ZONA. This will be the X's and O's guy per say.

My same buddy used to coach before a career change and knows Taggart from one of his coaching stops. After the hire, Taggart texted him that he would be staying given the hire.

I wonder if the JUCO Coach and Henry both had deals with Cal before, effectively taking the place of Team Reke on the staff per say.

The two bolded hires are great for now but long term, I am not sure. (insert "Josh won't make it more than 2-3 years anyway" here)

Pretty sure Robic has made it clear he would like to stay in Memphis depending on who they hired as the HC. He likes the city and wants to stay here if at all possible.

Trust me, I would like for him to stay, but Cal is a factor for him.

You call yourself a major basketball program and you are happy with a assistant coach as a head coach. I am sure you know but major basketball programs do not get assistant coaches as head coaches. Good luck, I hope he loses every game and then they bring back Tic Price.
Your bitterness is showing.

Josh already working his magic..I had heard he hired Xavier's dad today, interesting. I think Taggart made the right move by staying put. I thought after the hire of Josh that Coleman and Dodson would stay at Memphis, a big + for Memphis.

That is so magical.

Per Dan Wolken:

- An Internet rumor that Pastner is going to hire Jim Rosborough, a former colleague at Arizona, is false. Don’t look for Pastner to hire Kevin O’Neill on his bench, either.

- The local TV reporters, as they usually do, jumped the gun on the Carl Henry to Memphis staff story. I wouldn’t totally rule it out, but it’s extremely premature. Typical of TV reporters here, though, to take something that Parrish threw out on Chris Vernon’s radio show as speculation and run with it as fact.

- I think it’s very likely that Matt Eisele, the coach at Miami-Dade Junior College, ends up with a job at Memphis next year.

Pastner's hiring ends a whirlwind search that began when Calipari resigned last Tuesday to become the coach at Kentucky. Over the next five days, Memphis officials inquired about a number of high-profile, experienced head coaches including Missouri's Mike Anderson, Southern Cal's Tim Floyd and Baylor's Scott Drew.

I guess the Commercial Appeal is scrubbing Memphis' failed run at Bruce Pearl from the record books. Either that, or this is a not-so-subtle insult. :)

... My friend has decided it is a "great hire!" because Pastner graduated from college in 2.5 years and got his Master's and therefore he is a 'genius'

does your friend realize pastner got his degree from the university of arizona?

WTF hire is dead on. I know quite a few aren't too big on Pearl but given how NOBODY wanted the Memphis job, a school with tons more tradition than UT, I'm glad we weren't left with a vacancy to fill and hearing one rejection after another.

No kidding! Better them than us any day.
