Just lost ESPN on Spectrum

Charter offered to accept The Walt Disney Company’s “market” carriage rates provided that it can give its cable subscribers, for free, access to Disney+ and other Disney-owned streaming products e.g. ESPN+. (Their argument is that asking a subscriber to pay more for linear channels — as part of a package stuffed with ones they don’t even want — whose content often ends up on a subscription streaming service is double dipping.)

This isn't gonna be settled anytime soon. If you want ESPN that isn't going to be cancelled, then you need Hulu Live.

We are safe

According to USA Today, these are the only games that won’t be shown if this doesn’t get resolved.

Saturday Northern Illinois vs. Boston College (12 p.m., ACC Network) Louisiana Tech vs. SMU (12 p.m., ESPN U) Arkansas State vs. #20 Oklahoma (12 p.m., ESPN) Ball State vs. Kentucky (12 p.m., SEC Network) Massachusetts vs. Auburn (3:30 p.m., ESPN) Wofford vs. Pittsburgh (3:30 p.m., ACC Network) SE Louisiana vs. Mississippi State (4:00 p.m., SEC Network) California vs. North Texas (4:00 p.m., ESPN U) New Mexico vs. #23 Texas A&M (7 p.m., ESPN) South Alabama vs. #24 Tulane (8 p.m., ESPN U) Coastal Carolina vs. UCLA (10:30 p.m., ESPN)

I think this is a bigger push for all the content providers to move consumers to à la cart based services. Why strike deals with cable/satellite providers IF you can capture those consumers with your own package deal, like $10.99/mo for all the content that’s under the Disney umbrella? I pay $5.99 for Paramount +. They’re just figuring out how to cut out the middle man.

This is a no-win situation for both. Spectrum will lose customers. Those that go to another place for service doesn't really give Disney any more customers. Disney is just getting the $$'s from a different place. Disney will ultimately do to those services what they are doing to Spectrum.

And none of this helps the consumer at al.

I took the youtube TV free trial, but it probably will not work as a good replacement. There can only be 3 devices streaming at one time. I need 4 to keep everyone in the household happy. I'll also have to purchase add ons to mirror what I currently have.

That actually makes sense - I pay for Disney+ and ESPN+.

A lot of people have cut the cord and went that route. Not everyone wants to.

Yeah, I was in that camp, but when I looked at what I was paying for my cable package with all the fees for various equipment.. it just made sense to simplify and cut as much cord as I could. I’m happy with what I’m paying now and the channel lineup I have, along with just a few apps. It’s just maddening Spectrum and the content providers have the consumer stuck in the middle .

Disney never should've started D+, honestly who cares about watching old cartoons from the "vault"
They should've just let Netflix carry marvel stuff and just put their other crap on their own channels..
Everybody act like they have to have a + channel, I tried doing it the right way and subbing but it's gotten to ridiculous. Rates going up but content isn't getting better. I'll be going back to my old ways on a lot of stuff unfortunately.

As for Spectrum. I think I may look at going to YT TV. I got a nice Sony OLED and there's not a native Charter app for GoogleTV OS. I have to cast from my phone.
I have it on my AppleTV but for some reason Charter app is the only one that sometimes gets pixelated like I don't have highspeed data, that gets annoying.
My son just bought the latest AppleTV. I need to load the Charter app on his and see if his does it or if mine just needs to be replaced,

So we can still watch a lot of games because ESPN is putting them on espn 3? Did I understand this correctly?

You have to sign in to espn to watch anything. I’m pretty sure espn3 is bundled in with all the other games being played on WatchESPN or whatever it’s called now. You have to sign in with a provider and if it’s spectrum your sol.

I just looked it up. You have to be on a participating cable provider for internet now. You don't need to have ESPN in your cable package from what I can tell. ESPN 3 shows the ABC games but not the main ESPN channels generally. Those have their own feed. But you do have to log into your cable provider. So I would assume if they are blocking ABC for you, it won't be on ESPN3 either.

I missed that part originally. It didn't used to be that way.

I get D+ as part of the bundle but I probably haven't watched more than 2 or 3 shows over the last 3 months.

I have the D+ original plan that was disney add free, espn+ and hulu with ads, don't think they offer it like that any more
Disney raising rates and talking about cutting sharing your acct with others like family members.
I'll probably be letting it go

Spectrum / Disney cut us off here on the NC mountainside too .. the dirty bassturds.
Good thing my 22 y.o. son moved back in after graduating from App St; dude’s as big a vol fan as me (even more so during Basketball and baseball season). Due to his age, the poor guy has the BVS bad, although he’s in remission after 10-15-2022. He has found a way to get on his girlfriend’s dad’s Dish account Roku or something. Heck if I know.

Lordy but this woman is so confused!! We have an older (not smart) TV down in the basement and hubby is seeing if he can get reception on it so I watch the game tomorrow. It's not connected to a Spectrum box so my fingers are crossed. I guess if all else fails I'll listen to the game on my computer but I've been looking forward to this football season forever. And to think we just last month hosted a birthday bash for our 2 year old great granddaughter and the theme was, wait for it, Minnie Mouse because that's her current obsessions. I am not a happy Noni right now.

Yeah nope. Every stream gets shut down. Every single YouTube channel that had the UF game hit shut down quick
Must have figured out the racket over the Summer I watched A few Vols basketball games over the Winter while I was at work
