Kellie Harper discussion/debate thread [merged]

You don’t get to play both sides. Many have been “tough” on Kellie for years because she’s in over her head and you labeled us negavol.
big difference between you me and some others...I don't get personal
and I post from a life-long coaching perspective
So, yes, I will be harder and as well, more complimentary when she does well

I will be watching the game recording a little bit later...I don't need to do a turnover report,,they weren't awful...but what did happen?
Ima go see what happened....

Not on a message board, all things are equal. We are all fans with personal opinions, nothing more, nothing less. Labels don’t get assigned and then glazed over when those assigning do the same thing.

Not demanding enough? How about clueless? They had almost a week to watch tape of Indiana and figure out what offense and defense to run. There are no excuses and she sounds like she's shifting the blame.

LMAO at 'too nice'... did Pat ever look 'too nice' during a game? LOL
I think a little bit of both are correct, I said yesterday that I didn’t see any fire in the team, just going through the motions, like they didn’t care if they was to win or lose. Coach said she did tell the team about their 3 -ping shooters and what to do. So it’s either the players can’t execute what the coaches want them to do, or they just aren’t listening.

No one is ever pulled for leaving the three wide open.

Plus the reason for it is systemic and has to do with how we play help defense, how we approach screens and how we switch. Those things are corrected in practice, and if they happen in a game then the player gets to come sit and get a refresher course from an assistant coach on what they did wrong. And it might not always be the player trying to close out late who needs the correction.

But none of that is ever done. Teams don't even need great ball movement to get open looks from three against us.

That is not true. Kellie does pull players for defenses lapses. pretty regularly. She is clearly aware of the problem as she discussed in her press conference about the lack of court awareness and anticipation when it comes to guarding perimeter. Spear and Wells are still new to the system so it may take a little time for them in particular. We are still early in the season and the test will be if the team improves in the respect or not.

Kellie also said that the team is just "too nice" and let Indiana's physicality get to them. I think that (and the officiating crew who were letting them play) really got the team out of kilter. Another point to see what kind of learning curve the team goes on.

Darby left her guard open 6-7 times while going 0-7 on the other end before she rotated out.

And this issue is present no matter who the players are. It is a hallmark of her teams.

Yes, Kellie does give Tess way too long of a leash. But, I can understand how Tess creates a coaching dilemma.

I would bet $$$$ that during practice sessions, Tess works twice as hard as everyone else, has the optimal attitude and brings that touch of grit that seems to be lacking in some other players.

So, she is doing all the "role model" things that should get rewarded with court time. But, she is an average defender on her very best days and when she is not shooting well, her plus-minus is pretty dismal.

So you have the contradiction of your best "attitude and effort" player not getting it done on the court. It is a tricky culture issue to manage but at some point (like right now) performance in games has to take priority over "practice" (said in an Allen Iverson voice)

Coaches and fans have seen many a coach from pretty much every sport at the collegiate level run off because they fall in love with practice heroes but when the lights come on produce zeroes. It's a what have you done for me lately business and no matter how great a player is in practice and the role model stuff, if they can't get it done in games you have to move on and seek productivity elsewhere.

I have just tuned in the Lady Vols game and am really disappointed in what I am watching. These players are light years away from the types of players Tennessee used to bring in. We are so slow, make a ton of mistakes, and have little in offensive creativity and basketball IQ. Where are the athletes we used to bring in? Coach Harper appears to be an adequate coach but not one to lead the ladies back to prominenc.

Some have called it hyperbole, but here's where the current team stands now about a third of the way through the season:

Field Goal Percentage: .398 WORST IN SCHOOL HISTORY (next lowest .408 in 2015-16)

Free Throw Percentage: .589 WORST IN SCHOOL HISTORY (next lowest is .627 in 1985-86)

Three Point Percentage: .278 THIRD WORST IN SCHOOL HISTORY (two worst were .231 in 1988-89, .254 in 2015-16)

Points Per Game: 66.9 SECOND WORST IN SCHOOL HISTORY (worst was 65.6 in 2015-16)

Assists Per Game: 12.9 TIED FOR WORST IN SCHOOL HISTORY (the 1992-93 team actually finished with 12.91)
Kellie needs to work on her shooting. I thought she shot better than that.
