-As a Huntsvilliain, (that's Alabama , yup, right) I was at the game last night. I mainly post on the Football things, but I did end up going to the Von Braun Civic Center last night and saw UT vs. MTSU. Could have been the venue - not blaming anyone, so don't get me wrong here. Granted we are in ALABAMA, which is (or can be) a nightmare for any Tennessee fan.
3 things.
1) I grew up here wearing orange all through the 60's, 70's and onwards until my days as a student from '75-79 (Ernie/Bernie years). I really liked walking from my office downtown to the VBCC to watch the VOLS (Y'all can't fathom how much gas and driving I do to watch the VOLS, over the years, I still live here). YES it was great to see them play in Huntsville, and I hope that happens more. (BTW, Auburn women play on the same court next week). Never thought I'd see orange playing in this city. Probably won't happen again.
2) The MTSU team seemed to hustle more, and their fan base was loud, proud and vocal. They had a band and cheerleaders, and dance team and on and on. UT had nothing like that. Maybe this venue was better for MTSU than Knoxville, but it seemed like a home game for MTSU, and they "BROUGHT IT".
3) I like Kellie Harper, but what I saw last night was a LONG way from a Pat Summit team. I had a free ticket and not really following UT Lady Vols basketball, I thought this would be a slam dunk victory for the VOLS last night. I was wrong. That number 2 blocked shots (it appears we are having trouble drawing the fouls from the big-un), and the lack of rebounds and hustle were obvious. Dang, I saw the first victory of MTSU over the VOLS ever and it happened 2 miles from my house.
Honestly, I left that game a fan of number 2, number 4 and number 10 on MTSU. Those women balled out (can you say that on the women's side? asking for a friend). We looked awful. Was up by 9 and lost by 9. What's with that?
I even listened to all three podcasts of Brian Rice today on the Eric Ainge show and no mention of his trip to Huntsville. I saw him doing the play by play and thought it'd be cool for him to give Huntsville a shout - out (This really is a good place even though it's in Alabama). No mention of the game at all, but hey, IT'S A FOOTBALL SHOW, right?
GO VOLS FOREVER.
