One of my wife's old coworkers recently moved from NYC to Gallatin. She lived in a less than 1000 sq ft apartment and barely got by with 2 kids. She now has a 2500-3000sq ft house on the same salary.

I just did a search on realtor.com and found over 1500 homes for sale for 160000 or less. I wouldn't call that expensive.

Various. Brooklyn was where a lot of them were located. One was 1200 sq ft in Staten Island. There was a really nice 1 bd rm 750 sq ft condo in the Bronx
