Kim Caldwell (Rookie Coach of the Year-WBCA) is named Head Coach of Iconic Lady Vols WBB

Noone here believes she will truly take the job, but there is absolutely no reason we dont kick the tires here and gauge interest. One of the most prestigious programs in the history of Women's basketball wants you to be their head coach and willing to pay you 2x more than you are making now is kinda intriguing. Like SF said in a few posts earlier. This is going to be a female hire for obvious reasons.

1.) Becky Hammon
2.) Niele Ivey
These 2 probably wont take the job given their current job status, but like i said you have to make the call here to gauge interest.
3.) Lindsay Gottlieb
4.) Molly Miller - I like this hire, She is young and knows how to win. I think you give her the resources we have and sky is the limit.
5.) We are in trouble if we make it this far.

I didnt mention Dawn Staley for obvious reasons. UT cannot take another public NO like we did with the Clemson OC during the football search. Not with this program.
There are 100 coaches ahead of miller… put ur pp away.

Three. I think the reach candidate is A+, but long odds- maybe a one in three chance. They have expressed an interest in making her the highest paid women’s coach, with upside. Maybe she’ll listen. The other two are impressive, and an upgrade and both very interested as their agents reached out to us. It’s perceived that enough time has passed that someone can take the job and not be following Pat. Molly is not on the list of three. I think White will get this right.
The reach candidate is Becky Hammon. Pretty clear from your statements. She has plenty of runway here, especially financially as she currently makes less with the Aces than Kellie did here...

So for me then the question is why was Kellie's recruiting poor before NIL?
Don't know. But that's why she doesn't work here anymore. She did change recruiting coordinators a couple of yrs ago apparently to no avail.
😭 Good thing DW is in Atlanta
We should all head toward Atlanta! Mulkey alert!

Coaching hires is where TN fans earn our reputation.

Buckle up folks. Tennessee athletic administration is operating this women’s basketball team coaching search to perfection! This isn’t about politics. This isn’t about hype. This isn’t about the past.
The best candidate will get the job. And trust me there are some outstanding candidates in mix!

I get this is all hypothetical and who knows what White has planned or is really doing but (playing devils advocate).

I don''t see Hammon at all (she makes a million a year at the ACEs right now)

Ivey she is a Notre Dame alum and McGraw protege. She is in her dream job and its going well. If it's $, Notre Dame can outbid us.

So, I see those tires as waste of time to kick when time is of the essence.

Yeah, Gottlieb whose meal ticket wants to stay close to home and who has the number 1 recruiting coming to campus (and obviously a ton of support). Yep, she is hopping on that plane to do a rebuild in the hills of East Tennessee.

Molly Miller - great record at D2. At a D1 school that I don't think even qualifies as mid-major she has gone 18-7, 22-10, 21-10, 24-8 and I believe has one opening round loss in the WNIT and no NCAA bids. Yep, she is your home run hire...

Thanks, That was an excellent read and a very fair and balanced take on what Kellie did and did not accomplish. I 100% agree that her gains over the first four years were not enough to withstand a regression season, even if she faced some injuries woes, given the related fact that she just could not bring in enough talent, Kellie's dilemma was not quality but a quantity vis a vis top programs' recruiting. But the article also inadvertently highlight the ticking time bomb in the current scenario:

So, Danny White go hire that unicorn. You get a really small set of folks who fit that bill and Tara ain't leaving Stanford for a rebuild job at age 70+.

Kellie hit of those notes and as the article also notes she was hamstrung by NIL deficiencies. If EarlVol was correct that NIL help was coming, I would have loved to see how Kellie could have done with a more level playing field.

As it stands, the program is in a very precarious position...

I think that you read too much into "good person". As long as the new coach avoids significant controversy and the team makes deep runs in the NCAA Tournament the rest of the things will fall into place (at least in terms of the media narrative).

Incidentally, while Tennessee may have NIL deficiencies versus LSU, Texas, and a handful of other programs it is miles ahead in that area vis-a-vis programs that are truly in the NIL wilderness like Maryland.

What about Gail Goestenkors? 20 years as a power-five head coach, Hall of Famer, former Duke HC, assistant roles with the WNBA, USA bball, etc and so on. She made some bad career moves in my opinion. Should've stayed at Duke and not try to go in at Texas after Conradt's retirement with the program in decline. She was recently on staff with Kyra Elzy at UK, but now that Elzy is gone, she is presumably available. She's only 61. And for those who think she may be too old, Jim Harbaugh is 60 and of course, we all know his resume with Michigan football national champs and now the new HC with the Chargers , Geno is 70 and back in the final four this year, Kim M is 61. This is prime, not old. She ran a dynamic squad at Duke and definitely has the experience and knows the game and produced wins. Three point run and gun offense, full press choke hold defense. She may be squeamish about coming into another legendary program to rebuild. But if we can't get Becky Hammon, this would be my vote.

Out of said 100 coaches, which one of those is young and posts a 241-44 coaching record?? Ill wait.
What’s her ranked record? Bc apparently that’s all that got Kellie fired. Does she play LSU SC UCONN? It’s different.

Kellie could have a 80+% if she scheduled like Mulkey… that is the truth.

Walz, Payne, Smesko, Bluder, Yo, Curry, Lawson, Ralph, etc etc I would take before her.

Has she ever even talked to a top 200 player? Lmaoooo

You don’t fire Kellie for a woman who can’t win a sh!tty conference and get the honor of being beat by USC by 100 in the first round

A serious reminder that the Tennessee Athletic Dept.--and especially the coaching division--are by intent a family. Coaches love being where they can go to other sports' coaches for resources, advice, comradery or sympathy.

I cannot imagine Danny White hiring anyone who doesn't coach with and live out similar values. Part of keeping a strong athletic program is continuity of assistant coaches, and keeping Tennessee a place where young coaching talents want to raise their kids, as they're growing into their careers, and mature coaches want to finish their careers.

Goestenkors is done. Not only did she produce Kellie Harper results at Texas but more recently she couldn't even stick as an assistant coach in the W and at multiple schools.

see this is why it's so great Vol Nation is not making this hire. The over reaches are indeed comical.

However, DW already fooled me once this week, so I'm not completely ruling out anything.

I don’t mean this as a political/culture war point, but why are people debating a male vs female? DW and company have yet to make a decision where I’m left scratching my head. So male, female, or identifying as a lion, if DW is leading the charge, I trust the decision.

Perhaps Miller should win her conference once or make The NCAA tournament for the first time before she's considered a candidate for this job.
Maybe, or maybe not.

Riding that Kellie Harper train hard huh? I never liked the Kellie Harper hire. She failed at NC State and was ok here. But given this programs history and resources she should have done alot better. Maybe it was her, maybe it was money behind the scenes. We will never know. Dont bash my opinions when yours are just as awful. Have a wonderful day :)
