Kirby Smart Named UGA Coach?

Not sure about smart, I want to see who his coordinators is he hires. Hearing Muschamp as DC seems like strike one to me. Could his OC choice be strike two??

He was not really all that great at Ole Miss.

He was good enough to garner a better job in the same league and go undefeated. Tommy Tuberville is overall a fairly successful HC who went straight from being a DC to a P5 job; that was the premise. Neyland is not the last DC to succeed as a HC at a major university, as it was postulated.

I live in Atlanta and all of my siblings went to UGA, so I have been on their websites, and I have yet hear or see anyone mention Dooley for OC.

They simply haven't had time to think outside the box.

Way, way, way outside the box. As a matter of fact, it's so outside the box, you can barely see the box in the distance.

In that case, help us to spread the good news. You can use a link back to this thread as the source.

FYI, Tony Romo approves.

Who else has won a NC in SEC after going straight from DC to HC?

That wasn't the criteria. It was no DC since Neyland has been successful going straight to HC at a major university. Besides, who were major programs in the early 1900's anyway? Football had been around for maybe 30 years.

I think it has little do with what side of the ball you coached on or even title held. Dabo was never more than a WR coach. John Harbaugh was a ST coach. Both extremely successful guys as a HC. There's examples every way.

So Smart is not leaving Bama until they are done playing. So either Bama is okay with him recruiting for Georgia on the job or Georgia has decided to forgo this recruiting class.

Don't know how credible this is, but there are rumblings that contract negotiations have hit a little bit of a bump in the road.

Those wacky UGA fans, getting excited about a native son coming home to run the football program....

Smart's success will begin and end with his ability to keep all that in-state HS talent from crossing the border, and continuing to cherry pick the Staffords and Easons from elsewhere.
I agree and I believe he will do a much better job than most on this site think. He is a really good recruiter. In the past UGA has allowed a lot of good players out of their state.

Well its official, nobody will ever beat Georgia again. The football guru I work with (same guy who said tgey brought in Lambert to win the NC) said Kirby will have tgem undefeated by next year. I guess other teams should just forfeit.

*this guy actually believes this stuff

The issue isn't that a DC couldn't succeed as a head coach. It has happened many times before. The issue is that DC's under Saban have not performed well as head coaches largely due to the fact that Saban is the mastermind behind that defense and so the question becomes can a DC under him think on his own two feet without Saban's guidance? His OC's have done well and the reasons for that are probably that he allows the OC to run the offense completely and gains valuable experience actually running an offense.

Sam Pittman good, Jim Chaney meh; Chaney was ok at UT but did not do well at Arky, Enos has made him look like a fool in one year. Not real sure how this is an upgrade for UGA. You replace Pruitt with Smart, probably a draw. You replace Richt and Schotty with Chaney, a downgrade or draw at best. Definitely not an upgrade at recruiting on offense, probably on defense but Pruitt was a great recruiter as well. I am not sure where UGA is really upgrading, not to mention the unknown of Smart as a head coach.
