don't disagree on the reasoning to fire Richt, but there's no arguing the program had plateaued. for Richt to win a NT at UGA, it was going to be circumstance driven. he hadn't shown the ability to get over the hump. his firing wasn't, i think anyway, an indictment on his inability or ineptness as a coach, as much as it was an acknowledgement that they were what they were, and it showed no signs of changing.
Smart is, well, Mark Richt 15 years ago. and Mark Richt was good for GA for a long time. i think Smart will be too. i don't think he's as much of a gamble as say...lane kiffin...
the only thing you don't have with Smart is a proven HC track record. everything else he brings to the table.
the staff so far isn't blowing anyone away, but i dont' think it has to either. they're in one of the richest recruiting grounds in the country, and they have solid coaches hired so far.
Bottom line, GA didn't have to hedge their bet or go out on a limb. and they got who they wanted.
i'd say, outside looking in, not too shabby. if this doesn't work, it will be because Smart just isn't a head coach, just a really good Coordinator.
