Knoxville Restaurants

My wife and I went to The Lonesome Dove last night, in the old Patrick Sullivan's location in Knoxville's Old City.

We sat at the bar and had a drink when we got there. I had a "Sullivan Smoker." This is a Manhattan with Bulleit Rye. They have a thing right on the bar where they light some wood on fire, then put the drink under a glass cover, so that it takes on the smoke from the fire. It was fun, but I'd just as soon have a regular Manhattan.

We then were seated. I had the Rabbit-Rattlesnake sausage, and the Bowl of Texas Red, which were both great. My steak, however, was OK but not outstanding. The potatoes I got were awful. My wife had catfish, with which she was not terribly impressed.

Overall, I would say it's good and that it's good for Knoxville that we have this in the Old City. But I have to honestly say that it's not as good as Ruth's Chris or Fleming's, though it costs just as much.

To be fair, I would give it another chance, since it's new and might need time to get things right.

Depending on who you ask the answer varies but some people will recommend waiting several months before trying a new restaurant to let the kinks and staff changes get worked out.

Just got the low down on the new Copper Cellar brand restaurant at Middlebrook Pike and Bob Kirby Rd(across from Food City). It is in fact going to be a new concept. It is going to be more country themed. The menu will be kind of based off of Smoky Mountain Brewery. The large, outdoor, covered area off the main dining hall will be for live music. There is a decent sized indoor bar area and the plan is to have plenty of tv's and at least one big screen for games. It's sounding like it will be a pretty lively bar scene with all the great food that Copper Cellar restaurants offer, and a great place to watch the games. The plan is to hopefully open sometime in September around football season but they had a recent setback and the fire code is suddenly demanding they install a sprinkler system and they're already pretty far into construction.

Beat me to it. I guess they're letting the word out. Way it was explained to me was kind of a cross between Calhouns and SMB, with a dash of a place like Double Dogs.

The only thing I can add is I heard its something Mike Chase's wife is heading up, not that it really matters.

I'm pretty damn excited about it. Not really for football, but for basketball season.

What is the best Deli in Knoxville? Not looking for the chain Deli's. Any opinions?

Not in Knoxville but close by is Billy's Timeout Deli in Oak Ridge. I ate there for years, then moved away. Ate there last year and it was still good. Get the steak in a sack.

There is no word out on this yet but I've got sources though.

Tried Koko Japanese Grill last week. I ordered the hibachi chicken and steak with a side of sweet carrots. For the price (half of what you'd pay at Wasabi)it's not bad. If I go back, I'm going to try their sushi.

I might have to give them a shot. If you are ever out towards Hardin Valley I recommend trying Mikata. They give you the option of noodles instead of/with the white rice that comes with your dish. The brown sauce they use has crack in it I think.

Hibachi Factory now has noodles.

Interesting, but I always felt like they cooked the hell out of the meat.

That's about the only downside to Mikata is they don't deliver. Unless they use "Doorstep" and I don't know it.

Gave Big Monster Subs a try yesterday. It was good but not great. They did put a lot of meat on the sub, but for $16 they should. The bread sucked. Will try again but get a 1/2 on rye.

That is disappointing bc the bread is what really makes a sub for me.

$16 for a sub is pretty high.

I have heard that Shakolad is good, but my chocolate expertise ends at the super dark impulse buy bars at Fresh Market.

I can't stand dark chocolate or hoppy ales. I'm the lucky owner of the TAS2R38 gene. Naturally I failed that PTC taste test in Biology class too. Yay me!

What does having that gene mean? I tried to look it up and saw nothing but science that I couldn't understand

Basically it just makes your taste buds more sensitive to bitter flavors.

I think I ran into a guy that has a super strong version of that gene. I sampled him a barleywine and a mead-esque beer-- Dogfish Midas Touch-- and he told me they were too hoppy for him. In my case though I just told him that his taste buds don't work.

I'd bet that part of it is that some people just think that anything they don't like in beer is hops/hoppyness

He tried to pass himself off as knowledge, so I'm not too sure. Usually I am open to interpretation because most of taste is subjective, but you can only call the sky green so many times. Not the first time I've just had to outright tell someone they were wrong since I'm a straight shooter, but it is a very rare occurrence.

Ha, yeah, I certainly wouldn't describe MT as "hoppy."
