Litton's Market and Restaurant - Knoxville, TN - Litton's Market, Bakery & Restaurant

"We will be closed for our annual vacation from June 30th through July 15th. We will reopen on July 16th."

Years ago I was Litton's junkie...as the summer shutdown would approach I'd go though all sorts of mood swings, inability to sleep, depression but after I was accepted into the 'brotherhood' all was well...

After my brief probation period and my demonstrating my ability to enter and exit side and back doors, quickly locate and seat myself at 'reserved brotherhood tables' and access the backroom and the the very back, backroom and a few other skills without drawing the attention and or ire of 'regular customers' I was given the secret phone number and handshake, tab account number, and even key to be used only in the unlikely event that it might be required...all this my seem petty to some but I've known people born and raised here, eaten there 25, 30 even 35+ years and never extended any of these privileges...

I tried Hard Knox Pizzeria over the weekend, and that is by far the best tasting pizza in the area. Too bad no one locally makes a good deep dish like in Chicago.

I don't read the Pub very often but I can't sleep, so I read 30 or so pages, lots of discussion about pizza but no mention of 'Big Ed's'...I confess I 'don't get around much anymore' but I've been going to Ed's for 40 or so years and much of that time I did get around and it remained my favorite...

I confess that when I lived in NYC a few years I was able to find pizza similar to ed's in both ingredients and taste, but at the time refused to acknowledge it...

For those familiar with Ed's how does it compare to the others that are mentioned in this thread...thanks

I haven't been to Big Ed's in a long time but last time I went I don't remember it being all that special. That and the fact that it's a 20 minute drive out to Oak Ridge.

I love Big Eds. It's comparable to the places I've been.

I think pizza has its own thread. (I may be misremembering though.)

That's what makes Litton's special imo. I've got a few friends in that "brotherhood". I think that's neat.

The food is average. The red velvet is rediculously overrated. But only people living outside of Fountain City can see that.

I didn't think getting into the backroom was a big thing, in fact I thought you could request it.

Contractual obligation to mention Black Horse Pub

Whew, there. We'd gone about six posts. I was afraid someone would forget about it. :)

I got a little silly/over the top with my post this morning...the biggest practical benefit is not having to sign in and wait for a table, even on a Saturday night...but its also kinda nice to have a place like 'Cheer's, Archie's Place, or Moe's Tavern' to call your own

I can understand if someone doesn't care for Ed's but one thing I've always found Ed's to be is authentic, and consistent through the years...nothing has really changed...and I mean nothing, the structure (that toilet in the cellar has to be grandfathered in from the 1800's), business plan, or the pizza...I don't go as often as I used to but I can recall a couple of times they changed an ingredient and I asked about it...

Although I'm not a huge fan of their BBQ, the lunch buffet at Calhoun's is solid. Took my nurses today.

Having spent a lot of time in the Nashville area over the last month, I really wish Knoxville had at least a variation of the hot chicken dish. Asheville even has one.

Also I've been addicted to Soccer Taco this summer for whatever reason. Probably not a great thing, but it's an enjoyable place.

Which Soccer Taco?

I live around a mile from Market Square, so that's the one I usually go to. Went to the one in Bearden once, wasn't as impressed as I was with the downtown location.

The food at the Market Square Soccer Taco was absolutely terrible every time I went there. The Bearden location has always been considerably better in my experience.

I can tell you that Chez Guevara is better than either of those.

I need to actually spend money in the bar there rather just urinating there.

Over the years we've noticed a variation in Calhouns ribs. One time we went they were just chewy and not as good as they had been in the past. Someone from the staff came by and informed is that they had switched to a different meat supplier.

Hahaha

I definitely did not enjoy my food the last time I was there.

It's ok...nothing special.

I'd give it like a 3.5/5

Nashville doesn't really have places like Dead End readily available with a nice patio area and Happy Hour specials to compliment tons of wings and BBQ.

You could fill up on food and beer for a decent price.
