Knoxville Restaurants

Had another good meal at Mikata in Hardin Valley recently. I love how they offer noodles instead of/in addition to rice with their Japanese. I love hibachi rice at the grill but the take home hibachi rice doesn't taste as good for whatever reason.

Best steak I have ever eat was in Townsend at the Trailhead Steak and Trout. Plus just a hop , skip and jump to Cade's Cove.

A few years ago, Trailhead was magnificent. It has changed ownership and after a complete turnover of staff and menu, I heard it was nothing like before. Have you been recently?

I haven't had it myself but I heard something about the beer cheese being gritty for some reason. I guess that's one of the adjustments. I'll have to get in there and give it a shot when the new menu comes out. I've only been in the one time for a beer but haven't tried the food.

"Selective niceness", I've met a few people like that in my day. :)

the cheese has a couple days where it doesn't come out right, but it's definitely gotten much better and more consistent over time

oh, and the bartender you had was the one who just stopped coming in

I haven't been there under the old ownership
But I decided to stop by there bout a month ago I really enjoyed the food and staff was very friendly. Will definitely be back for another great steak. Prob this weekend.

That's crazy! I think he told me he had worked at Peerless for two years before they changed. I'm surprised he did that.

Yeah...it was surprising. His girlfriend was having surgery and he went multiple shifts in a row without showing up and without even touching base about it. Then when they finally made contact with him, he was just flippant about it and said he didn't feel like coming back. Having worked with him for years, it was definitely startling.

That place is good. As far as "fast" Japanese, it's a close 2nd to Fuji.

And you're so right on taking home the rice. I don't know if the steam in the box makes it taste different or what, but it's never quite as good as when you eat it in the restaurant.

I've driven by it on occasion over the years but never have tried Fuji. We used to get Hibachi Factory but Mikata seems so much better.

Yes, it's so strange. It's the same at a nice place like Wasabi even. Try and get the rice to go and it's just not as good as the grill.

Well this is prime season for patio dining since it's not too cold and not too hot during the day time. What would you guys say are some good spots for patio dining, where do you like to go? Doesn't have to be fine dining by any means but a good atmosphere and/or a view.

I haven't been in quite a while but Lakeside Tavern probably tops the list for good views.

What's the take on Knox Mason? Anybody eaten there? Taking the fam back to Knoxville to see my mother for Mother's Day weekend and my wife really wants to try Knox Mason. She's all into the "farm-to-table" scene...

It's very good. The seating is fairly tight, but I think that's intentional. The menu doesn't have a ton of variety, so check it out online and make sure there are suitable options for everyone.

Finally made it to Babalu. While it was tasty be ready to drop some coin. Probably will not go back as tapas isn't my thing and 10 dollar guacamole is a bit outrageous but I'm glad I tried it. Total bill for chips, guac, queso, three small tacos, small plate, one glass wine , water, tip.....72 dollars.

I've only been once as well. Was it crowded when you went? Wonder if it will make it in the long run...that rent can't be cheap.

No, the bar was empty and no wait for tables. It's always pretty full so people are loving it now. There is another tapas place where oodles used to be called Vinyl. And a high end Italian olace going in where latitude used to be.

Man, the best Italian food in East TN is in Mountain City. It's a tiny little place called La Cucina out in the middle of nowhere. It's owned by an Italian guy named Mateo. He does the cooking and it is unreal. It might seat 20 people, so you have to make reservations usually weeks in advance.

It's about a 2 and half hour drive from KTown, but it is worth it.
