Looks like Dave got what he wanted which was to shift the blame and focus onto Nike which as a big corporate giant couldn't care less. Brilliant move on his part in shifting the blame. Why does everyone seem to ignore the fact that this all started way before Nike was involved?
LEAVE THE DAMN LOGO ALONE!
But, even if the powers that be win this battle, the fight isn't over. We don't have to buy Nike UT stuff, if there is a market for Lady Vol merchandise someone will make it and we can all still wear it and embarrass Nike, and Hart, and not have to pay the licensing prices! Clearly fans can and will still chant Lady Vols, and if we demand sports writers and commentators refer to them as Lady Vols it will further insult Nike and Hart. Fans should support players to only refer to their teams, and school as Lady Vols, the coaches may not get away with it, but the athletes sure can. All we have to do is boycott their UT product, and buy our own versions. Refuse to buy cokes in cups that don't say Lady Vols and just drink water out of the fountains at games. No program sales, no money to Nike and Hart. We deserve two logos, I don't care what every other school does, seriously Notre Dame has tons of logos ( Irish, Fighting Irish, Four Horsemen, etc) do you think the University still doesn't make money off these logos? Hell yes they do, and no one is going to tell them just use one. Auburn Tigers, Auburn War Eagles, Alabama Crimson Tide, Alabama Elephant, Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, Georgia Tech Ramblin Wreck, these schools still use several logos. If Hart wants to be stupid and let Nike say only one, then we should just refuse to use it as fans. Mickey Dearstone should come out and say even if the future changes for basketball too, he will still refer to them as Lady Vols. The local sports writers should get on the band wagon too, or we stop watching their news. We don't have to accept what Hart and Nike tells us, they want money, and they want the debate to go away, when it becomes a running joke that won't stop, they will cave in.
True also. The majority of Vol fans have never cared about the Lady Vols. They only seem to tune in when they make the final four or WCWS and then complain if they don't win it. But, for the minority of us who do care we can make them feel it in their pocket books.
The irony of course is that those "vol" fans wag their finger and preach to people like me that I have to follow all vol sports or I'm not a true vol. Meanwhile they don't give a damn about women's sports and either hope it goes away or as you say tune in for 5 minutes to an NCAA game and then post about how lousy the team looked.
John Adams has written at least two columns supporting Lady Vols name etc., pretty much said hart was on an ego and testosterone trip in refusing to listen to dissent.
Guess that proves the old saying, "even a blind hog...."
It is easy to be on a testosterone trip when the BOT is backing your play. Not so easy if he didn't have their support.
Agreed, I emailed them as an alum and donor. Don't expect any kind of response. But then UT's BOT doesn't exactly have a stellar track record. You know, silk purse and sow's ear:neener:.
I'm just guessing but I suspect this whole thing started with Dipietro going to the board and making his case for the Logo change. The underlying reason is of course political correctness but he probably pitched the Nike deal and how Nike recommends this. There are probably a couple of others on the board who are in cahoots with Dipietro and have been pushing for this. Then they gave their marching orders to Cheeks who hired Hart and gave him the marching orders. This is the only thing that makes sense.
Somehow I can't see Dipietro being engaged enough to be aware of the Lady Vols name and logo, let alone trying to remove them. However, if he thought he had to be politically correct or was trying to follow some perceived 'big boy' institution, maybe it is something he would do. Cheek is a cipher IMO, and hart is a jerk...just a dog marking his territory. The BOT and Haslam are the ones that have really disappointed, the BOT for not being involved before and not participating since, and Haslam for his refusal to committ...too busy being a politician.
Andy Holt, Ed Boling, Joe Johnson, Bob Woodruff, Doug Dickey...and now. Just think of our last three presidents (not counting Joe who stepped in to bail out the ship) and our last two ADs.:banghead2:
well if you did, you would either be blind or noticed the people that go to Lady Vol events and travel with the team DO NOT JUST WEAR UT OR ORANGE they wear Lady Vol logoed merchandise. So your ASSumption was out your yankee vol rear.

What % of Vol gear sales is of Lady Vols stuff? I'd bet it pales in comparison to where it won't make much if any of an impact on the university. It's just he way it is.

And some of the Lady Vol militants won't get the memo and will accidentally buy plain old mean male Vols apparel...won't their faces be light blue splattered over orange?!?
I don't mean this toward you, but your statement highlights what I think the AD unintentionally accomplished - he divided the fans into two camps, equally militant.
You are exactly correct. The AD has divided some of the fan base by accomplishing the opposite of what he said they were trying to accomplish.I don't mean this toward you, but your statement highlights what I think the AD unintentionally accomplished - he divided the fans into two camps, equally militant.

I have no supporting data but I would be greatly surprised if Lady Vol apparel sales is greater than other apparel or even a significant per centage of total sales. But if true that only makes me wonder why the University bothers with something this insignificant from a numbers standpoint. All the AD did was start a needless fight with little to gain or lose from an apparel sales standpoint.
