Lady Vols Softball Team Game Thread week 7

Prince is a quality pitcher who can laser the ball in at the knees pretty well--that's a pitch we have to lay off off. Geer didn't and struck out twice. But we handled her well enough and I think we can do so again tomorrow. We've got a high quality lineup.

Lockman had a nice hit today and I think is starting to come on as a hitter. She drove one in the gap to the wall. I can see both sides of the argument about taking her out for a pinch runner, but I wouldn't have done it, for what that's worth. Rowland is probably not a natural bunter--more of a power hitter--and with a two-run lead I might have just let her hit away. Different coaches make different decisions--it all worked out.

--I can see why McSwain struggles to hit for average. I hadn't noticed it today, but she has a VERY long, looping swing--too long, really. It's hard to hit for average with that kind of swing, but it does provide some power--and even not playing regularly she's got 4 homers. But she got a huge hit today--credit to her. In contrast, look at Gregg's somewhat short, compact swing--she is a textbook hitter.

--Wasn't Vines mostly slapping out of the 2 hole in the first third of the season? Ever since she started swinging away more she's been on a tear and she has really added some pop the lineup.

---Leach has 42 runs scored in 38 games. That's excellent. I've said it before, she's an excellent leadoff hitter. Draws walks, gets hits, gets the bat on the ball, has speed--big asset to this team.

Feels like this team is starting to come together. Let's win tomorrow, too!

She does. Very Cheyanne Tarango-esque.

I'd like to see Weimer get some more at bats. She is a right-hand stick who had a stellar freshman year at Univ. of Buffalo and she looks pretty good at the plate. The Weeklys pitch hit her when the can--one at bat yesterday--but it's hard to get into a groove getting one at bat every two/three games. She may not be the answer, but right hand hitting still a bit of a weakness for us, though Lockman and McSwain have picked it up.

Speaking of hitters, what has happened to Annie Aldrete? I checked out her stats for the Univ. of California, and...ugly. She's played almost every game, and is hitting .222 with 2 homers and 14 RBI. Yikes. This from a player who had an all-SEC type year for us as a freshman, hitting for average and power. I think she was our best hitter that year, no? She started her soph season fairly well here, then as I recall struggled down the stretch in conference games, apparently affected by the death of a very good friend of hers. Shen then transferred to Cal and she's not been the same since--very average, at best, last year and now bad this year. Strange. I think she's just lost her focus or confidence, or something. I certainly don't think her freshman year here was a fluke--she can hit, but something has got her out of kilter.

I think Annie was way more mental than most of us thought her sophomore season when she lost her best friend in the world by taking her own life. That along with her then boyfriend transferring to Cal as well I guess really hurt her badly. A great talent and the freshman year and all those travel ball years were not a fluke. I was a little pissed at her but we have to realize she was a teenager. I hope she has gotten help and has a wonderful life.

You are right Armchair she is not a natural bunter but the fact still remains that Ralph had enough confidence in her to put on the bunt sign to get Lockman to 2nd base. I don't know if you noticed but when she got back to the dugout Ralph was chewing her azz out as she walked in. Lockman was hung out to dry, which she did!!

...when she got back to the dugout Ralph was chewing her azz out as she walked in...

The team dugout was on the first base side. Ralph was standing in the third base coaches box when both Lockman and Rowland made their way back to the dugout. You most likely saw Marty McDaniel.

Lockman was at fault for getting picked off--not Rowland. You never assume that a batter is going to get a bunt down because very often they don't--and this is true at any level, softball or baseball. You, as a baserunner, need to get far enough away from the bag to give yourself a good chance to get to second if the ball is laid down--but Lockman clearly went way too far; she was /at least/ a third of the way to second, if not farther. Maybe she was cognizant of her lack of speed, but you can't get caught like that.

Her boyfriend didn't transfer to Cal, he's at Arizona State, same as Annie's brother.

Knowing people close to her, the passion for the game that she lost here after the death of her friend was not waiting for her closer to home like she thought it would be. She has devoted a lot of time to charity work and awareness for domestic violence and suicide prevention.

The other thing that has affected her game is that she has always been a tireless worker that did a lot of extra hitting work on the side. At Tennessee, that was easy because the players all have 24 hour access to the batting cages and film rooms.

At Cal, the players only have access to the facilities when the coaches or strength coaches are there, which is not all the time. If a player there wants to hit extra on the side, they have to schedule a time with a coach and reserve time in a facility. It is a different world outside of the SEC.

You maybe right but a chewing she did get because I saw him in her face!

What is Ralph doing? Gregg has got a 3-0 count and he has her taking, with 2 runners on? That is dumb! Don't be so cautious! Let her hit there. The kentucky pitcher grooved one right down the middle of the plate! She ends up walking and Geer--who's been bad this series--hits into a double play! You've got a 3-run lead--let your best hitter take a hack at a 3-0 pitch if it is a pitch she likes. Damn.
