Lady Vols Softball

I have been getting into softball more and more. I saw TN is a top 10 NCAA team. I haven’t posted because i am not as knowledgeable but i also have been reading about the coaches starting to be over their heads? Is this not a good thing for the team and did they
underachieve ?

The Legions Of The Miserable on VolNation will find a way to complain for a coaching change no matter what...even for a program that was just awarded a Number 9 national seed (and consistently receives high seeds).

I'm concerned about destroying the confidence of all the other LV pitchers, which could have long-lasting effects ---- glad I don't have to decide

If you signed up for tickets mine have showed up in my allvol account. Third different location for the year but these are the best location so far.

This a loaded question with no short answer. As a snapshot we have had a good season and may have a great one as it plays out. Softball like other sports just doesn’t play out over one season. The program has stalled out since around 2016 being really good but not being elite. The big hit was our recruiting took a hit in some areas. Case in point Ashley is great but we have little behind her. Hiring Megan as pitching coach seems to have helped. We still need some new blood in the coaching staff not necessarily a total redo. It seems to be heading in that direction too.

thank you! so srta like the bball team we just got new coaches and it’s not a complete overhaul it seems to have shook things up in a positive direction.

.....and averaged 45+ wins a season over the last 16 seasons (discounting last season).

In contrast to the sunshine pumpers that always complain even if the team is probably seeded higher than they should be.

Hey, kregman, I appreciate all you bring to the board with game updates and such. If you are there Friday, I will buy you a coke.

I don’t follow them at all just knowing they have the one real good pitcher but reading some they are not well liked for some reason maybe because some things like their reaction. Good luck next year with Ncaa though. They can be vindictive as we know.

Tarr isn't well-liked because she doesn't really do the pomp and circumstance PC stuff that a lot of coaches do. If she thinks something is BS she's not shy about letting it be known. I remember back in 2013 after we walked off against them in OKC, she was pissed in the post-game because her pitcher, Kaitlin Inglesby, had a small injury where it looked like she pulled something, and there was a brief delay. Afterwards, the umps wouldn't allow her any warm up pitches, and Tory Lewis walked it off. I thought she had a good point, personally, and I like coaches that let it be known they have their players' backs. Also, men's coaches do that kind of stuff all the time and nothing ever gets said about it. Hell, our baseball coach basically picked a fight after the game with the opposing coach yesterday. Personally, I'm not sure that if this were a baseball team, that it would be an issue.

Ralph needs to retire so we can get a real hitting coach on the staff. As long as he's here it's basically an empty spot on the coaching staff. He's not even engaged in the games anymore.

I'm not sure what you mean by "high seeds". If you mean a top 8 seed, that's not a true statement. If you mean top ten, that's semi-true, but a 9 or 10 seed isn't favored to host a SR anymore than a 12 or 14 seed. Since 2013, the last year we actually won a game in OKC, our seeds have been 10, 8, 13, 8, 10 and 12. This is with us consistently getting top 5 recruiting classes so I'm not sure why you don't understand fans' frustration with the coaching staff.

It's also been frustrating the last several years because our RPI has caused us to be underseeded a few times (i.e. 2014, 2016, 2019), we always get paired with another SEC team in the Supers.

This season, based on our RPI and how we finished out the regular season, I'm stunned we got a seed that high. I expected 11-13 range. Our RPI was 11 or 12 after the SECT. But I think LSU and Mizzou are also overseeded, especially LSU. WTBS, teams like Arizona, Texas and FSU were ahead of us in RPI, and I'm not really convinced they deserved top-8 seeds, either, so I guess it's kind of a wash. Probably the one one that could lay claim to it would be Arizona. I do think Washington is underseeded. Based on their RPI, they were seeded correctly, but the committee threw out RPI numbers for teams like Oklahoma (who was behind both UCLA and Bama) and Missouri (who I think had an RPI of like 13) but followed it very closely for teams like LSU (despite all those losses) and Washington (who I think is definitely better than probably all the teams seeded 7-15). I also think Kentucky is a worse team than ASU, Washington, Oregon and Clemson, and Oregon and Clemson deserved a seeds over both ASU and Kentucky IMO. Also, I think Michigan or Liberty should be hosting Duke, not Georgia. And Clemson should've been sent to somewhere like Lexington or Austin, not Tuscaloosa. I'm just glad they didn't get sent here. That would've been us hosting Oklahoma State in 2011 or Arizona in 2016 all over again.

I'll never forget that decide it all game and the umpires.....whew our fans were letting the umps have it and deservedly so

Yeah they had a player that kept leaning into pitches and getting hit. She had been doing it all year long and she had so much armor on that side of her body that she looked like an alien. I think she got hit like 4 or 5 times in those two games vs us and she was only denied first base once due to leaning in/not attempting to get out of the way. And then Kelly Grieve got called out on a play at the plate to end the game where it appeared she was safe.

Always nice when the Holly Warlick Water Carriers have an opinion on coaching ability.

I guess no one should post positive statistics. I guess water carriers mean something to you but in truth it's just another lame abusive term you use when someone does not meet your expectations for negativity. Not buying what you're pushing.

Tough spot for a new coach to step in. One year on a contract agreement for KW, unless White re-works it to a two year deal extending Karen only through 2023. I don't see Marc being the choice, but he may be the only option if a contract isn't worked out.

Yep yep....I thought Kelly was going to rip that ump a new one with that fire she let out

Committee disagrees
I meant it that we are pretty even with them on the field. Missouri deserve to be ranked higher they beat us but I’m be happy to play them again. I would say it is safe to say a lot of coaches disagree with them this year. I posted that before they showed where we landed at #9. I would say they think we are pretty even.

don't know why anyone would think that, maybe one decent pitcher --- will they start their best against the LVs or save her for game 2?
I think it because we had to come from behind to beat them early in the season. If they get three or four runs against our second string pitcher their pitcher is more than capable of shutting us down and them winning. It was 3 to 2 we were behind until the sixth inning when we managed to score two and win the game by bringing on Rogers to close it out. I don't think the team wants to risk losing the first game and Rogers doesn't guarantee that either but it is certainly the way to almost certainly get it done. I would see how the game goes if we score early and often she wouldn't have to pitch many innings. She is the only pitcher we can trust even against E Ky. I'll be totally surprised if they start anyone other than Rogers Friday.

As I’ve said several times before, Karen has already agreed to a new multi-year contract that will kick in when Ralph retires. If you’re curious about the timing, yes, Danny White has signed off on it.

Marc will not be a full-time coach for Karen.
