Latest Coronavirus - Yikes

Taking the family to Disney World in September. Was looking forward to not having to deal with masks. But, starting Friday they are goong back to to requiring masks indoors. This sucks.

We’re headed down Sept. 24 and staying through Oct. 3 for the big 50th celebration Oct. 1. It’s going to be a great trip! We went in February when masks were required and in June when they weren’t. Masks indoors really aren’t that bad. Having to wear them outdoors in the parks was a bear. Glad that’s not coming back.

Didn't realize this until just now, but Burundi's president mysteriously died, also. So Nkurunziza (Burundi) and Magufuli (Tanzania) along with the recently ventilated Haitian president were big critics of the vaccine and miraculously, they is a shift in policy with regards to the vaccine. Eritrea is one other country that has been hesitant to get the vaccine. That president better watch their back...

Tanzania: Goat and fruit test positive for COVID-19, President questions testing kits - Republic World
Tanzanian President John Magufuli has dismissed COVID-19 test kits after a goat and a fruit reportedly tested positive for the infection. Magufuli, who claimed that the kits had ‘technical errors’, had previously attracted global criticism for concealing information about the outbreak in his country. At present, the East African nation has recorded 480 cases and 16 deaths.

Burundi Becomes 2nd African Nation To Expel WHO

Reuters reports That Burundi is expelling the national head of the WHO and three of his subordinates as the country prepares for a presidential election that is being held next week. The WHO had repeatedly raised concerns, claiming holding the vote during the middle of the pandemic wouldn't be prudent.

These claims obviously irritated the government, which is pushing to hold the country's first election since President Pierre Nkurunziza stepped down in 2018. A successor candidate from Nkurunziza's party is strongly favored to win. His government has been accused of human rights abuses and has previously kicked out UN representatives and others investigating human rights abuses, but opposition candidates are openly contesting the vote, and any suppression tactics have been largely hidden from view.

Many critics of the government and the opposition criticized the decision, though notably, nobody is advocating for the election to be cancelled, a sign that the WHO's insistence wasn't popularly received. The campaign has already involved many gatherings where people were crowded together, and many suspect that the true toll of the virus isn't reflected in the official numbers.

Well if the incumbent party and their supporters are not willing to call off elections and the opposition party is not willing to call them off, then why is the WHO wanting to hold up the election?

How can you be so certain? The goalposts are moving all the time.

Had a great meeting today with my new graduate students. Sat around a table in a circle with no masks and no worries.

The Uni president is having us either upload proof of vaccination or get tested weekly at the university's expense in order to be in person. No word about masks, and I hope one doesn't come down the pipe.
We had to do the same thing here at the new College I work at. All students, faculty, and staff are required to provide proof of vaccination (unless of course a medical exemption). I just left a large state university in the Midwest where they didn’t care so much, but here in New England at this private Liberal Arts College, it’s a whole new beast.

Wearing a mask to keep someone else crud off of you is just another way of creating a crud barrier, which is the entire point of masks.

Logic indeed.
Except that you creating an environment for the crud to thrive and are breathing in the crud all day.

Dude, what do you think “prevent the spread” means? Those are YOUR words. Tell me again how no one is saying it’ll stop the spread. Plus, look at all the mask rhetoric out there from the beginning. Whether explicitly stated or just implied, the message was masks=no spread=you don’t care about killing grandma. Maybe the maskers meant slow the spread but prevent the spread, as you stated, means you stop the spread from happening. Now you can go back to sleep.

Are you kidding? You're misrepresenting what I said.

No rationale person would ever suggest that a mask STOPS the spread but it's common sense (and scientifically proven) that it HELPS to prevent the spread. You can tell that's what I meant by the way I used the word "HELPS" in front of "prevents the spread." Those were "my words."

Much in the same way a condom HELPS prevent the spread of STD's but they're not 100% effective in STOPPING STD's. This is the nuance I was talking about you guys lacking, it really doesn't take much effort to get here.

Stop attributing this hyperbolic black and white line in the sand to every argument.

Well shouldn’t the requirement be for only people that are sneezing or coughing then?

Waiting for the ICU survivor video where the guy say "Eff yeah, that was awesome. So glad I didn't get vaccinated. Would do it all over again!"

Sure.

However, only if you can accurately predict when you're going to cough or sneeze, whether you will be in a public space around others and whether you'll be symptomatic or not. If you can, move to Vegas and get rich.

I think most people are able to tell when they are symptomatic. In fact that is kinda the definition of symptoms isnt it? When the disease presents itself thru various physical measures.

As an aside, so much of this discussion is foreign to me now.

Professional and academic musician communities immediately section off anyone who appears to be sick. It's been this way since long before I got involved in the community. I came in for classes as a grad student a few years ago feeling rotten and with a cough and I was sent home and told not to come back until I was over it.

Can't perform when you're exhibiting the symptoms on the side of a NyQuil bottle.

That's just it...

You could be asymptomatic and still be shedding the virus - in fact these are the ones to worry about the most. As more people get vaccinated and symptoms of the illness are suppressed or ignored as being something other than covid, people stop quarantining and spread the disease. In fact, my mother believes she was infected by vaccinated friend who was generally asymptomatic and who later tested positive.
