My view is they were protecting the type of research that was going on including GOF and the scientists who did it. I don't doubt they sincerely believe it is research that should be done but the scientific community increasingly moved away from it given the dangers vs the rewards. The Obama administration essentially shut it down though work arounds were found. The Trump administration loosened the restrictions and Fauci/Collins build something like secret review groups to do the required reviews. Bottomline, they were committed to keeping GOF research alive despite the restrictions and majority view that it was too dangerous. (the WaPo article does a deep dive into all this).

Fauci vs Rand Paul - Fauci plays the Clinton depends on the definition of "is" game to deny he funded GOF research but it's hard to argue he didn't included the EcoHealth work.

I'd guess neither of them knew what was really going on in Wuhan since they have other funding including the CCP. It's just that a lab leak reality of an engineered virus (presumably innocently done for the betterment of science and accidental in release) is nail in the coffin for GOF, is a black eye for science and might expose the lengths they went to to keep GOF research going with Federal funding.

Flash forward to today and two government agencies say the likelihood is that it leaked from a lab.

And the reaction from the right is to embrace the news as correct and proving them right.

I think logic left this debate from the get-go, as far as the right is concerned.

start with your first sentence. the government stance was that lab leak was not plausible and a conspiracy theory - that is distinct from a claim it was likely a natural mutation (which implies it is also plausible it was a lab leak). I posted the words of the NIH director who labeled the lab leak theory as a dangerous conspiracy theory.

you ignore that scientist were suggesting the plausibility of a lab leak and they were marginalized.

Science is not about politics. The experts sent to study the virus said it was likely engineered. The mutations are not consistent with evolutionary theory. The virus behaved unlike any other known coronavirus. I still can't smell skunks, farts, gasoline, or the BS that comes out of your mouth. The virus JUST HAPPENED TO APPEAR across the street from a Coronavirus research lab that we know was conducting GOF experiments. And the virus has devolved to a normal cold virus.

I was thinking about this a little more and can’t get past the assumption that any sane person (especially at NIH) would want to know with certainty whether a dangerous virus slipped out of a Chinese research lab.

If the above is true and Fauci’s concerns are truly as he stated in the emails, then I would think it’s very likely he already knew this must have come from the lab.

Those numbers don't tell us much. What percentage of those latest hospitalizations are vaccinated? How does that compare with the population in general?

It's pointless to even track C19 cases now. People hardly test nowadays and even more rarely report

well they do tell us how many people hospitalized have Covid (whether or not that's why they are hospitalized) - that's probably the most accurate number. cases is under reported for sure and deaths could still be over reported as I still don't know if there is consistency in dying with Covid vs dying from Covid.

From what I can tell, the percentage of hospitalized patients that took the shots has continued to increase. Prior infection definitely conveys some protection. But, I think the primary driver has been decreased virulence of the devolved strains. I've known and seen several people/patients who did not receive mRNA shots who swear they have never had it before and have had mild cold symptoms with their recent case. I don't know of any pediatric hospitalizations or complications in many months.
