So we should threaten to pull out in full and remind them when the extremists come knocking....... And they will........they no longer have friends to count on.

You realize that's just as absurd as saying we should withdraw from Europe and Asia and everywhere else right?
pulling out of a specific nation, especially one as small as the UAE, is not on the same plane of existence as pulling out of a whole continent.

There could be any number of valid reasons to leave a specific nation. first should be them asking, or no longer cooperating.

I said UAE but I meant to imply Saudi Arabia and others who are currently talking out both side of their neck. They don't trust the more hardline extremist countries either but they've been asked to show solidarity and to send a message to those at home. You leave UAE you are also leaving the Saudis, Lebanon and others.

The bigger point, specifically to the poster I responded to we can't be isolationist. We have to be involved in the ME because we have a need for oil. We can produce what we need..... But for how long? And EV is a non starter because of the dependency on Chinese tech and rare earth minerals.

We could produce all the oil we need for the foreseeable future. we just need politicians to get out of the way.

I think the opposite of your fear for isolationism is what we are dealing with today. we are TOO integrated into the world's business. there is no reason we should care about some of these regional conflicts. there is no reason we should be getting involved into EVERY conflict that pops up. we don't need to go full isolationist, but IMO we do need to take a couple good steps backwards. Take care of our own issues for once, find out who our actual friends are and who is actually a good partner to have on the world stage. We are so integrated that people, including our own citizens, take us for granted and don't realize the true implications of our involvement. simply because that is all they have known.

I agree we are too involved. But I disagree on finding out who your friends are to some extent. Your friends are just those that benefit mutually. If they benefit from someone else to a higher degree than what you can offer you are expendable.

and again pulling off the stage shows how essential we are.

Ras assumes there wouldn't be any drop off if the US wasn't the world's police, the other side thinks it would be a total collapse. Its somewhere in between. but right now the world has no clue about what that value is, and again takes us for granted. like you said about the UAE facing those extremists alone, just globally.

personally I don't think there is anybody that could replace our global presence in less than a decade. the Chinese are spreading but they don't have the ability to project force, and they have been the single largest benefactors of stability America has brought the modern world. I think you would see a lot more regional powers step up, and yes in regions there wouldn't be anyone and the bad actors would take over. but until/unless we do that the world can assume we have no value, because the modern era is seen as the natural default for 2024, instead of an enforced peace.

The Nazis were a big fan of his type of foreign policy

We can't beat the North Koreans.
We can't beat the North Vietnamese.
We can't beat the Taliban.
We can't beat The Houthis.

But let's fight Iran, Russia and China.
