List your candidates to replace Holly......

:popcorn:Goestenkors was very successful at Duke and an absolute failure at Texas. She "resigned" is bull...quietly forced out because she did not produce.

I agree. Texas had all the resources needed for a coach to create success; the fact that GG could not translate her success from Duke is a bad sign. Even in her Duke heyday, there was a lot of talk on fan boards that GG often had a deer in the headlights look when her team was placed under pressure. She was a great recruiter but never could get supremely talented teams over the championship hump.

This thread should be more about how Holly can improve going into next season. Hart will "not" fire her after this year. There's too much $$$ left on her contract, and women's bb isn't a revenue-generating sport. Finally, Hart hired her. Unless she cheats and is caught or breaks the morals clause, she's here for at least one more campaign. We need to deal with her return as a fan base.

If I were Holly I'd let JLaw go and bring in the best guards assistant coach possible. Two of our three true post players graduate and "no" replacements are in the pipeline (currently we have zero signees, period), which means the LVs will be a guard-heavy (DD, Carter, Middleton, Cooper, Reynolds, Jackson) team next year. MR will man the middle, and hopefully with more bulk and BB iq, along with an off-season attitude adjustment toward toughness. Who knows if Jones will ever play again. Dunbar is a shooting guard in a small forward body with no defensive acumen whatsoever. She may never see quality minutes, thus is the number one candidate to transfer. Nared needs major improvement in the off season, but has the potential to be a solid small forward.

This most likely leaves a three-guard lineup with MR and a possible rotation of Nared, Jones and Dunbar at forward.

Conclusion: run, press, run! The guards must get in the gym this off-season and practice shots all over the floor until they can hit blindfolded. MR must eat and lift weights, work on her jump hook and free throws. Jones must recover and become a calm, mature player. Dunbar must defend, defend, defend and learn to use her size to properly box out for a rebound. Cooper and Jackson must mature and increase their BB IQ. Middleton needs to work on her foot speed and passing to the post. She has the potential to score (second only to DD). Diamond needs a good off-season of national-brand play under any coach but Warlick. She must fully recover from nagging injuries abd realize her full potential without the constant "feed the post" bull her current coach obsessively preaches!

Holly was a guard and should put away her antiquated (not a dig at Pat; merely an ode to modern basketball ... look at Golden State's brilliantly successful small-ball approach) philosophies and embrace her guard-heavy roster next season. If she doesn't her days will be numbered.

If Holly can't turn it around in 2016-17, look for Tyler Summitt to replace her. He is making strides as a head coach, proving he's not merely a mama clone (he and Pat are actually quite different). He's incredibly bright, tough, thoughtful, determined ... and destined to lead the Lady Vols into the next generation! Don't think nepotism. Think legacy. Think BB IQ at its zenith. Think success.

Holly's a sweetheart of a woman in over her head. I'll always cherish her contributions as a player, assistant and local legendary Lady Vol ... but the proof lies in the facts. This is a roster of her recruited players, and they're a collective mess of vulnerable, confused, unmotivated teammates after more than half the season. Not a good sign!

Go Lady Vols!

Good luck to Peyton and his Broncos Sunday.

Just say no, failure at Seton Hall and recently with The Sun is a cause for concern

Anne Donovan had crap team when she got to Seaton Hall. The team she recruited ended up being pretty good with the next coach. She has a lot of experience and the important point is she is available. Most of these other candidates will have to be pried away from their current jobs.

Two year contract with a bonus package would give her a chance to prove herself. Then bounce her if no improvement is made.

Money is not an issue at all :hi:

Money is always an issue, especially for non-revenue-generating sports. Hart has much invested in Holly, mainly his pride and the UTAD's budget. He recently made a big-$ hire in football eith Shoop. He doesn't want to deal with a buyout of Holly and a national search for her replacement.

Hart most likely will suggest Holly fire one or two assistants to save face, then pray she turns things around enough to skate by until her contract expires.

If Hart is still around at that time, he'll make the easy hire with a low-dime approach and name Tyler Summitt as the next LV head coach. We know Hart isn't into the vetting (hello, Donnie T) process. None required to hire Pat's son!

Bill Lambeer New York Liberty coach Look at his Bio!!!

I have been avoiding posting in the coaching replacement threads, but this one interests me - not because I think Laimbeer would be a good candidate, but because it's an off-beat choice. And I like off-beat.

Reasons Laimbeer might be a good hire:
-11+ seasons coaching women.
-Won three WNBA championships
-Won NBA championships as a player
-Position as GM means he knows the business side of the game
-Pugnacious reputation as a tough guy could translate into being a no-nonsense disciplinarian

Reasons Laimbeer might not be a good hire:
-Soon will be 59 years old
-No experience college coaching
-No experience on the recruiting trail
-Has openly expressed he wants to be an NBA coach and left one WNBA job to pursue coaching opportunities in the NBA
-He's independently wealthy. He doesn't need a job in Knoxville
-He's a northern big-city guy. He doesn't need a job in Knoxville
-Career winning % of only .560. Not bad but nothing special.

Laimbeer is an interesting idea. While the OP may have been jesting, I like the off-beat approach. But the negatives far outweigh the positives. 59 years old and no college experience means he'll never be hired. Any interest he may have in the job he would quickly lose and would likely bolt the first time another offer up north came along. And I think he'd have to be paid a gabillion dollars to interest him enough to come to Knoxville.

What about Carolyn Peck? Very smart lady, great basketball mind, played at Vanderbilt, won national championship as coach, she sees the problems with UT. I think she is an excellent candidate.

Seems most you all have listed people who have worse resumes than Holly's, with exceptions of Geno, Mulkey, and Frese. Tyler has hardly shown anything as a coach or a recruiter to make one think coaching is a gene related quality. How about we let Holly have a bad year, a failure before we fire her, or look for a replacement, this year is hardly over. She has either won the SEC or the tournament every year. Yes she hasn't gotten to the final 4 but had injuries not happened we would have last year.

Perhaps you should take a look at my pick - Steve Gomez

He is from Lubbock Christian University, a DII school but check out his record. With a roster of good players he would be the real deal

Jody would do it, but I'm not sure that would be the wise choice. She's had some problems along the way that would need to be vetted.

Dawn would never leave SC to come to UT. Why would she? She has her program on a roll.

Matt Mitchell- can't afford him and what has he done anyway? Made a little noise but that's it. He's never won anything of any significance.

How can't we afford these coaches? Pat made like $1.2M her final year. Staley's at $1M and Mitchell is at $1.14M.

FWIW, I think Mulkey, Tyler, Dawn, Gail, Mitchell, and Nikki would be AWFUL replacements. I'd go for Muffet McGraw or Wes Moore or any other coach who has done MORE with the players they were given, not less or what was expected. And, no coach who HASN'T had success as head coach like our current head coach.

Staley and Mitchell would be awful? I'll take both's ability to attract top 10 classes to previous doormat programs and give them UT's resources and see what they could do.

Coach at Western Kentucky, Michelle Clark-Heard, great recruiter and a real tough basketball mind. She could be a steal!

SEC TV money and all the money coming into Athletics...like I said money will not be an issue...especially something so small buying out Holly...it would cost less than 4 million dollars to fire Holly....With that one check Hart will get in June it will be pocket change

I know that some have questioned Kellie Harper's readiness after a stellar stint at Western Carolina followed by mediocre results at NC State, but she has her Lady Bears at Missouri State rolling right now. They were favored to win their conference and are 4-2 in conference play right now, but they do have two road wins against SEC teams (including a 15-pt. win over a team that beat us this year).

Someone questioned her fire when being compared to Pat, but here's a Youtube clip of her at NC State coming out on the floor & giving the official an earful (almost getting "Teed-up"). Sure reminded me of classic Pat: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0obc3t0T5sI

You can read her lips when she yells in his face, "ARE YOU BLIND???" Loved it when he warns her and she turns back & barks at him while walking back to her team.

Like to see some fire like that from Holly.

I did see a clip of her at practice talking about how they stress fundamentals & getting each player to improve their individual weaknesses to become a complete player.

Haven't seen them play this year so don't know how they look offensively, but they're on a 4-game win streak.

I've thought of throwing her name out but figured she wasn't big time enough. She's turned that program into a mid-major contender every year. My parents are Lady Topper season ticket holders and absolutely love what she's done.
