Looking like KJH is the play

AGREE - Fulmer has not made any bones about making his legacy one that will put him in the light as one of the best ADs UT has ever had in the position.
If you disagree, take a look at the Neyland renovations. Things got put on hold for a year or two so the coaching staff could be funded correctly.

All of that points to this not being a cheap hire. That said, however, I can see him picking the person that is "UT born and bred" and knows what legacy is all about.
you mean like how Jeremy Pruitt is "UT born and bred" ? thanks. ;)

I'd be interested to know who, if anyone, has been strongly approached and said no. I think Wes Moore at NC State would have been a fantastic hire but it has been reported that he isn't interested. I wonder if he truly is not interested or if he wasn't approached so he cut the rumors down by saying he was not interested.

Karl Smesko was mentioned on another board. I'll admit I don't know much about him, but his record is darned good. Apparently, USC made a run at him in 2017 when they had an opening. He turned them down. He would only consider a move from FGCU for a team that had a legitimate chance of playing for a national title.

I think we tend to look for the best coach at the cheapest price. Or in women's basketball someone who played for Pat. We always think if you played for Pat you will be great as a coach. Holly was not a great communicator with the fans or the players JMO> I think at least Kellie can communicate that may be all she does may not win and she is not the coach yet so let's see what Phil does then we can relate a lot more as to what will happen. He may fool us all.

Don't say the head coach of the Lady Vols is a done deal Fulmer or someone representing Tennessee going to the women's final four according to the Basilio blog so maybe we'll hear some other names.

This intrigues me. Would Graves be available if we threw the money? Also, given Ionescu how much success does he get attributed? Or might the Mulkey rumors I've called crazy actually have some teeth to them?

Hate to admit it...I’m swayed.

Of all the coaches in the final four I think Kim is the only one it might be about. I don't see Graves leaving the Pacific North West and Oregon is a great school to recruit to.

Kim feels constantly under appreciated at Baylor and has had difficulties with their athletics department. She has made some pretty candid comments this season about not getting the respect due to her for the program she has built there. And it's not like Baylor had anything going on in terms of Women's sports before she arrived. She took them from nothing to a contender year in and year out.

Her teams are some of the most successful in terms of sports programs at Baylor and she's basically the only coach there who's team hasn't had a scandal but she constantly gets brushed aside as unimportant.

Some people think if she wins the national title she'll just retire and spend time with her grand baby, but she's only 56, still a lot of coaching left for her I suspect. I can't figure out why she has never been asked to coach the Olympic team? She played for USA basketball, is an excellent and well respected coach and has years of experience. Instead Geno just passes the torch to Dawn? Didn't sit right with me, I thought she should have been the next coach after Geno.

In no way would I consider her as a potential candidate at this point, but I would be elated if she were. Guaranteed winner. At every level of her career she's done nothing but win and make young women better people. A whole lot like Pat, who she had a lot of respect for.

Read the 'however' in my original remark.
I was stating that I don't think Fulmer is afraid to spend the money to make his legacy.
BUT he also has a soft spot for the university and I can see him hiring a person that has ties back to the program and its tradition.

When we hired Pruitt, if say Tee Martin for example, had any success or experience at a head coach level I bet he would have been the guy instead of Pruitt.

I highly doubt that Kim would leave Texas unless her daughter's young family wanted to move to Tennessee with her, but BOY would I love it if she would! And I am positive that she'd have the Lady Vols back on top quicker than Walz would. Thing is, even though Kim is not a LVFL, she may as well be one judging by how much respect she's shown the program during her career. It was so obvious that she absolutely adored Pat, and fans would absolutely adore having someone like that on the sidelines.

What IF? It's something to dream about.

I honestly don't know why people would be so against Gail coming here. Somebody can't put together a logical explanation as to why they would want Kellie but not her, other than Kellie being an alum, which is the only reason she's even being considered for the job at all. There's no reason at all to think that Gail wouldn't be respectful of our tradition as a program and Pat's tradition here.

First, I fully agree that Harper would not be in the consideration set if she were not "in the family." There is a large segment of long-time fans who are desperately wanting the next coach to be Pat 2.0. These fans were the ones who acted as though Tyler deserved the job by birth right. And in Kellie, they see a younger version of CPS.

For this program, the real issue is not following a legend but letting go of a legend. Just because Harper resembles Pat, moves like pat and even expresses the same coaching philosophy, she is not Pat who was a coach from a different era, with different experiences, and a different historic position in the game as a pioneer (even early in her career).

On the pro-side, one could say that Harper is a young, energetic coach who is trending in the right direction and maybe just got the NC St job too early in her career. Gail G. is on the other side of hill, older (56), failed at her last head coaching stop (and yes, I have read on this board that Texas hired her, and paid her a million plus a year salary for five seasons, all for the intentional purpose of "sabotaging" her so that Texas would not be as good as they were under Conradt. Sadly, I don't just have enough tin foil to get my head around that theory).

Sabotaged or not, Gail G. resigned from Texas citing reasons of mental fatigue. Later, she resigned as an assistant coach from the Indiana Fever for the same "mental exhaustion" reason.

I seriously doubt she wants back in the coaching game but I be would be hesitant to invest in a coach who may not be able to stand up to the pressure anymore.

This program needs an infusion of energy and enthusiasm. I am not sure if Harper is the right choice but I am confident she can bring energy and enthusiasm.

I would want Kim Mulkey over anyone in the country.

In the spirit of full disclosure...USC offer was $400k. Waltz is gonna cost us a helluva lot more. I'm seeing a win/win by hiring this guy. He's proven...at his level...and he won't cost us nearly as much. LV fans won't like it, but life's a beech.

Karl Smesko is the Homerun hire of the mid-major route IMO.

Lynn Swann is terrible AD who refused to pay market value for any WBB head coach.

So $800 k to $1 mil with buyout considerations? I’m listening.

Yeah Saban was Alabubba born and bred, Vince Dooley was Georgia thru and thru, oh wait, he went to Auburn, Doug Dickey was a pretty good AD at UT, but he was a Gator. on and on and on.....

I know, probably a pipe dream, but seeing her run the place would be fun. She’s just a born winner and she and Pat obviously shared a great deal of mutual respect.

I have no doubt that if she came to UT we would be competeting for championships again within two years. Heck she might be the only person that could take the Lady Vols to the final four in her first season. What a sports story that would be! Instant revitalization.
