A lot of people don't know this, but Gail had her legs cut out from under her when she accepted the Texas job. She was not "allowed" to retain any of Conradt's assistants which pretty much killed any connection to Texas HS and AAU recruiting inroads. There is a theory that GG was hand-picked then set up to fail as to not tarnish the legend's reputation. It's also been said that GG could have "burned the place to the ground" when she resigned at Texas, but chose the high road instead.Anyone who has Peck on their wish list needs to get their head examined. Gail shouldn't be compared to her in any way, shape or form. She didn't do well at Texas but it was way better than Peck did at Florida and much better than Jollie at NC State.
This makes more sense than anything I've read on this board in days!
What Harper can bring immediately is improved defensive intensity and structure; for a;ll the LVs failings on offense, they could have won 5 to 6 more games and hence had a much better seeding, if they could have closed out some games on the defensive end.
Their press was easily broken; they could not keep players from driving around them (even when having an apparent advantage in quickness); and the team's backdoor was always open.
I think Harper might work out in regard to keeping most current and incoming players on board but her ability to recruit at a top flight level is a total unknown.
It is very possible that she could get this team in a much better place next season (again assuming no major transfer losses) by just focusing on the details of defending and rebounding (echoing the Summitt era), but the question is what happens 2 or three years down the road? Can she reload the talent pool?
Maybe 2 years at most to get in a few of her type players. Well disciplined high fundamental and hard working along with the ones that buy in and stay I can see playing for SEC Champ and deep in big dance by year 3. Hopefully year 2!I wonder how KJH would do with some of these rock star players who aren't used to discipline. Can that culture be built up again with this squad, or would that take a few years?

Texas women's athletic department was a cesspool of negativity... Current AD is cleaning that up one step at a time. I hope Tennessee hires the right person to re-establish what Pat built. I absolutely adored and admired her persona, and had the utmost respect for her. You didn't BS with Pat... If you did you'd be playing somewhere else REGARDLESS of who you were. That's the disciplinary standard she set and kept... it brought her success... and it needs to be reinstituted. As an avid fan of the women's game since I was a kid in the late 70's, I feel about Pat like I do about Aretha Franklin... so grateful she happened during my lifetime.Yep, coupled with her having to recruit against Baylor and A&M, she had a hard time getting recruits to come and had constant problems with the administration there. Aston has recruited much better, and done nothing with the recruits, but has also dealt with problems from the administration there. Baylor and A&M both won NCs while Gail was at Texas, and they were both in the Big XII, as opposed to the current situation where A&M is in the SEC. Gail was in just as tough of a situation following Conradt at Texas as Kellie was following Kay Yow at NC State, but Gail doesn't get a pass for it, like Kellie does, despite Gail having such a proven record at Duke. (As an aside, Kellie also had issues with the administration at NC State and that should be taken into consideration. But you can't mention Kellie's problems at NC State without doing the same for Gail at Texas.) People have glossed over Kellie's failure at NC State, despite Gail being in just as tough of a situation at Texas, and maybe a tougher one, with Gail doing better at Texas than Kellie did at NC State. She really just got sick of all the bullcrap at Texas and that's why she left. And as for her "quitting" jobs in the WNBA, she was an assistant for the Sparks and the Fever, and coaches quit and switch jobs constantly in the WNBA. It's a coaching carousel, so I don't know why she's being called out for that when it's commonplace. WNBA assistants don't make crap.
I honestly don't know why people would be so against Gail coming here. Somebody can't put together a logical explanation as to why they would want Kellie but not her, other than Kellie being an alum, which is the only reason she's even being considered for the job at all. There's no reason at all to think that Gail wouldn't be respectful of our tradition as a program and Pat's tradition here.
For all we know, Gail might not even want to be a HC. Fine. With what they'll be paying Kellie (cheap) that leaves that much room for an elite staff. So go after Gail as associate HC if need be. Or Balcomb. Or both. There's no reason at all we won't have money for an elite staff of assistants if Kellie is hired.
Well just came from facebook and seems a lot of hell was raised about the Lady Vols being coached by a man. I don't know exactly who all these people were but seems that fulmer may have got a lot of heat form some groups or numerous fans or whatever. I think I could see a lot of them on facebook as most were saying they wouldn't buy tickets if it was a man which to me seems to be reverse discrimination working at UT. It should be the best person regardless of man or woman If this is true I hope this is not the way any AD will go about choosing a coach it is just not appropriate.
You're right, the best person for the job should get it regardless of sex. I love how sexism, racism and all the other -isms come into play in sports and politics but can only be used by certain segments of society and only when it fits their narrative. I say if it's Walz or some other man that's hired and people want to get upset and not buy tickets then they can stay at the damn house and use the time to unwad their panties.

The job certainly brings expectations and they will be high if everyone stays that is on the team. That is something to think about if you want to coach here. Your walking into a place where you are expected to win big next year or you will certainly catch the wrath of quite a few fans.I really like Gail, but I wouldn't want to come to Tenn. because a big chunk of the fans want an instant championship from whoever is the new coach.
