Majors on Butch: Best UT Coach in 10 Years

of course, we could also just compare their records while coaching at UT, since it was for similar time periods...

Majors - 116 - 62 - 8

Fulmer - 152 - 52

Of course, each of them could be compared for their last ten years and get a better picture of how the program was headed, and after Fulmer's career plateau NC.

Then the record would be:

Majors 81-30-6, about .710

Fulmer 85-41 about .674

Coach Majors and coach Fulmer both played at Tennessee. Combined they lead our Vols for 33 years. How can any Vol be anti either?

You left out winning percentage. Fulmer should have a big edge there.

Yeah no doubt that Fulmer would have a big edge in that statistic.

What many fans still don't factor is the shape of the program when these coaches got their job here. Majors took the job when the Vols were down. Fulmer got the job when the program was loaded. Big difference. Fulmer never had to rebuild the team

The anti-Fulmer group just love to cut and paste.

Why couldn't Fulmer land another significant coaching job? He threw his hat into a number of coaching searches yet for the most part, none of those programs gave him the time of day. Wonder why?

So,in a nutshell,Majors is saying that Jones is the best coach at Tennessee since Johnny Majors..without coaching a game..sounds like an Onion headline

That sounds about right

Hope he is right.

I think he is possibly right about the "best coached team in the last ten years part".

If so, that is really because this group of coaches as a whole does not neglect the smallest detail and because Butch is really engaged and in charge of all aspects of coaching the team.

My heart sank last year when Dooley said I he's not involved with the defense. I can't imagine Butch, or any competent coach, saying that.

Kiffin was really only focused on one side of the ball, too, so even though our defense was schemed great some of the player fundamentals started to slip. A guy would often be in the right place but fail to make the tackle.

Fulmer had great assistants, Chavis and Cutcliffe, during this time period. There is no doubt those guys took care of their side of the ball. Still, he was not engaged like Butch is right now to say the least. By the end, I don't know what he was doing exactly.

But hey, after Butch wins National Championship 7, 8, and 9, maybe he will get complacent. It is human nature, after all.

All sorts of reasons. Majors was hired after, but why did he only go 12-32 after that if he was so great? Hmmm?

Johnny Majors has earned the right to say whatever the hell he wants to say about Tennessee football. Just nod y'alls head and move on.

Damn right H, he's like your onory papaw or Mamaw that just speaks their mind now and says whatever is on their mind, you just say wow and move on. You still love em though..

Who said Majors was great? I didn't say anything about Johnny, but the FACT you need to change the subject speaks volumes.

There is only one reason he hasn't been hired. No one wants him.

I changed the topic? Really? Mr. "Why hasn't Fulmer been hired?" in a thread about what MAJORS said about Jones, the third coach after Fulmer. Yeah, way to stay on topic.

And, you know NOTHING about what was in Fulmer's head. I know I've applied for jobs that I didn't necessarily really want, but did anyway. He may love Tennessee and didn't want to leave the state. He did have another job that had fewer hours than coaching, so maybe he wanted to continue having more time for his family. Fact is, you don't know anything except that you want to drag the man through the mud.

Try looking at their best 10 years at UT - CPF averages 10 wins, CJM averages 8.5. Lies, damn lies, and statistics.

You ignore the fact that CPF was part of building up the program before he took over - maybe had more to do with it than CJM. One could argue it was about damn time after 16 years that the program finally had 2 or 3 good years in a row (but of course still managed to lose to Bama).

The son of former Georgia coach Vince Dooley "knows how to coach," Majors said, and he'll get the job done if given the opportunity.
"I think he'll do very well," Majors said before speaking at the Cellular South 1st and 10 Club Monday night at Heron Lakes Country Club. "I think he was a very good pick. I've been an advocate of his the last two or three years since I've got to know him at a lot of coaching clinics

lol out loud

When Kiffin was hired Johnny said he was a good hire. When Dooley was hired Johnny said he knew how to coach and would get the job done. Now CBJ so hopefully Johnny will be 1 for 3 (excluding Fulmer completely).

This is exactly what I was thinking. I dint remember the quote but I remember hearing something to the effect of Dooley being a great coach.

In fairness I hope every UT alum says every coach is great. Bit forgive me if I don't judge butch on majors recomendation.

The biggest robbery was not giving the Heisman to Peyton Manning.

SEC still gets the Heisman shaft because former winners vote on it and the North/West/ND still has a lot of biased voters that take care of their boys first. Peyton was a prime example of that.

If the vote is reasonably close, you can bet the athlete from OSU, MI or ND will get it because of past wieners.

If Peyton beats Florida, Peyton wins Heisman.
