Just heard on radio that he may be suspended for season after getting paid for autographs. Sorry if late

Your lead-in says suspended.
All I'm seeing in the press is word of a possible investigation.
Do you have information that the rest of the sports world doesn't?

Supposedly he is from a wealthy family so I assume he has walking around money and he could make a lot of money when he finishes at A & M by being a "former Heismann Trophy winner" from speaking engagements, etc if he doesnt't play in NFL, so how dumb does he have to be to accept money now to jeopardize the chance to become a repeat Heisman winner?

Think About a golfer. He can play in professional tournaments but as soon as they accept money they lose their amateur status. Very similar thing here. College athletics sign every year a clearly defined statement against accepting money. The second they do so the are professionals.

I still don't agree. Golf is a whole different animal than football. Say a kid at Carson-Newman receives $5 in gas money to drive to a local middle school and sign autographs for the football team. I do not now consider him a professional athlete.

Don't make a declarative title like that if the suspension is just a possibility. I fine you 300 interweb points for the infraction.

The amount of money is important when it comes to penalty but your example also loses that kids amateur status. Any money collected does that. Small amounts are allowed to be paid back and short suspensions given. IMO the amount here will carry much higher penalty than the other cases like AJ Greens deal.

If a player got $5, the NCAA, historically, would make the player give $5 to charity, protecting his amateur status.

If a player gets 5-figures for signing autographs, while in town to watch the NCAA Championship game... It will be interesting to see what the NCAA chooses to do.

Yes and I disagree that the kid would lose his amateur status over that. I'm just saying, IMO, that kid isn't a professional athlete for taking $5, no matter what the NCAA classifies him as.

Also, a student athlete can lose their amateur status without accepting any $ at all-- just by meeting with an agent.

If the NCAA is consistent, they will give Manziel a chance to give that money to charity. With his family being as well off as they are, Johnny won't miss any time for this. That's going under the assumption that the NCAA is consistent, which happens about 5% of the time.

Keep in mind repaying the money has usually been accompanied by a suspension period. AJ green got 4 games. IMO JM gets at least 6 games

True. I once again disagree with the NCAA (surprise, surprise) that the suspensions are different lengths for different amounts. If they pay the money back to charity, I don't care how much it was. They both profited 0 for that.

Considering the severity of the infraction, and JM's flgrant showings in the media, the NCAA may decide to wash their hands of the bad attention and not give the opportunity.

Then again, they may fear a lawsuit for punative damages associated with ending his athletic career, and put their heads in the sand.

Then again, they may see him as a cash cow and put their heads in the sand.

Then again, JM may develop a screaming case of herpes that prevents the wearing of a uniform, and make this all a non-issue.

The problem I have with this is that it promotes the activity. Do it; don't get caught. You keep the $. Do it; get caught. You lose the $, but lose nothing else.

It's a no-risk proposition. And I'm not sure the NCAA wants to make that statement regarding 5-figure autograph deals.

From his actions and what I have read about him being unhappy at A&M, he my be looking at not playing at all this year and enter the draft as soon as possible. There is
nothing left for him to gain by playing another year. He also runs the risk of injury by playing another year.

Most seem to think the NCAA is wrong for monitoring things like this. I think rules like this are very necessary.

If such rules didn't exist the boosters would clearly use these ways to buy players thus getting around the extra benefit rule.

These rules are clearly defined to every athlete and IMO very necessary and must have a penalty if broken. Just paying back the money presents zero risk and doesn't deter such actions

If JFF is out, our only real competition is LSU, and they lost a ton this year. So Atlanta is guaranteed, and I like our chances against the little sister division.

So yeah. Threepeat confirmed.

Nobody could beat the 18-0 Patriots either.

Maybe it's just me but it's sad that you're on a Tennessee forum and turn a thread about Texas A&M's QB into talking about your own team. If you want to be a homer and talk about Bama then why not go to your own board? I'm sure you don't go to the Alabama forum to read stupid comments from LSU and Auburn fans about the Tigers in a thread that's completely unrelated, amirite? You're such a homer that you get off on bragging about Alabama on rival sites apparently. Sad...
