I have to say, the rule against this baffles me. A player can get a summer job and earn some $. Why can't he get paid to sign some things? It doesn't affect his status as a student athlete any more than does the summer job.
I can see banning taking compensation or deferred compensation to get involved with an agent because that makes you a professional football player. But signing autographs isn't really getting paid directly to play. It may spin off from that, but not the same, imo.
