Marlin Lane or Rajion Neal?

Show me two equal talents.

But directly to your point. The younger player, if truly equal, can use the experience of that PT to help you in the future. If you have a Sr and a SO that are equal then you let the So get the experience so he's even better in the future. You lose nothing now and gain alot later.

The flip side if this is you go with the more experienced of the two if they're of equal talent. Experience is an important intangible.

If head coaches used the logic of play the younger guy to get him experience over the older guy, Trent Richardson would have started over Mark Ingram as a sophomore.

I wouldnt say that. I think Lane is the better pure RB we have. Lane fits Jone's offense better than Neal or Hill but all 3 will get their share of touch's. Lane and Neal are serviceable RB's but if Lane has fully learned to trust his knee he is by far the most talented RB on the roster. But cant wait to see Hurd, Paulk and whoever the 3rd RB is we take. Much brighter outlook at RB in the coming yrs.

You are wrong yet again.

Neal is physically more gifted than Lane regardless of Lane's knee. Lane does show better vision and instincts. But physically there is simply no way Lane is "by far the most talented RB on the roster". He also doesn't fit Jones' system better than Neal.

Experience makes the guy a better player, right? But it isn't just being older.

Both will see action, depends on down and distance. Alden Hill will compete for playing time. :hi:

I think Hill will see a lot of PT...correct me if wrong but Hill is the fastest of our backs. With the type of schemes Jones runs he will be the type of player as Harvin was for the Gayterds..

No. Hill is the slowest. Neal has been one of the fastest players on the team since he arrived. IIRC, he's also one of the pound for pound strongest players on the team.

It's been 3 years since Lane's knee injury. Why are people still bringing that up? He's either back from it, or he'll never fully get back from it. JMO

I like Neal. He will be helped by Gillespie with his vision. He will be a good one cut back.

Thanks for the info... I knew he was strong and last year he showed he could run in the lanes instead of all the dancing around before hitting the lane. I just remember him getting tackled from behind a lot.

It's not just you who thinks that way. Neither one is hard to bring down, but Lane at least has some moves, and might make somebody miss. Neal is supposedly fast, but doesn't turn on his speed unless he is in the open, which doesn't happen often.

My thoughts. I feel like he's proven time and time again he's the better back. He had far and away more big plays last year.

a coach decision should not be decided on seniority only but to say it should never in any circumstance be a factor ever I think is a little unreasonable especially when you have equal talent. Are you to tell me that someone who has worked hard for 3+ years and is as talented as an underclassmen in the same position shouldn't have an advantage?

Yes. The best players should see the field the most.

Neal has limited vision and hesitates when he does see a hole. Just not a natural runner. Strength and speed make up for it a little, but when a guy is one of the 3 fastest on the team and has no break away runs, it says something. Neal should be burying dbs and some lbs in the turf.
Lane has better vision and can make people miss. He doesn't have breakaway speed, but can get to the secondary. Need to see if his head and leg are in the game.
I would rather they be 2nd team at best. Neither would be 2nd team on most other sec teams.

Neal. He's shown that he can get it done against the better competition. Check Lane's better games, against weak defenses. JMO. He's a good football player, but I don't think Lane ever lives up to the type of back we all once thought (me included).

Stats don't back up your statement on competition.

cfbstats.com - Marlin Lane Jr. 2012 Player Statistics - Tennessee Volunteers

cfbstats.com - Rajion Neal 2012 Player Statistics - Tennessee Volunteers

Check out the stat for "vs ranked opponents"

Did you see the stats for each and who they got their yards against? Neal did good against UGA and UF, lane...Troy, Mizzou, UK. That link also doesn't show a lot of things. Like Lane not getting the starting job after an entire offseason of competition. Him losing the starting job after taking it in the NC State game. Also in Miss St game when Neal gets hurt, Lane plays two plays and comes up lame. When he's had the chance to take the starting job, for some reason he doesn't step up and take it.

And you can post what stats you want. Anyone who watched the games would know that Neal played better against better comp, unless they are dishonest.

Neal avgd a yard less per carry, and .2 yards less against ranked opponents. Only an arrogant fool would think less yards per carry is a positive.

what do you mean Neal or Lane? we are going to need them BOTH. Alden Hill will be needed as well. we dont have an elite back like Gurley. But what we do have is 2-3 solid backs that should be better this year.gonna need them all.

Running back by committee will be the name of the game in 2013.

Lane had more yards per carry versus ranked opponents, so no, Neal did not do better against ranked opponents. Lane got less carries (coach's decision), so you can't just look at total yards to figure out productivity.

Call me dishonest, because I'd start Lane without even thinking twice. He's just a better natural runner with better playmaking ability.

yes sir. i think they will be fine. they also catch the bell well. i think they will do good.Hope Alden keeps up that tough runnin!

1)What ranked opponent did Lane shine against? 2)Could Neal being 80% against say...SC sway those numbers? Serious question. Lane didn't perform against top competition the way Neal did. Turn on the video. It's right there to see.

Neal also missed some time and wasnt quite the same. he wouldnt have been a 1000 yard rusher but he could have been in the high 800s. Not too bad when your not getting every carry. i think they will both be good for us this year along with Hill. Its gonna take everybody we got back there. Just hope they all stay healthy
