Martin Offense vs Pearl Offense

If he preferred it, then why did he recruit personnel that couldn't run it? His last two rosters were perfectly tailored to a halfcourt style.

No, we got destroyed by Louisville that year.

You are correct, that was the yr before but the point still remains he was as successful in the run and gun as he was in the half court.

He thought having longer athletic players would be able to run his run and gun style but they were not effective in that style. There is no telling if he would have went back to it or would have stuck with the half court since he was successful with it as well.

I agree. Losing to Indianapolis, or by 30 in the opening round of the NCAA was quite the overachievement.

Indianapolis was an exhibition.....are u also going to point out when he lost while coaching the orange team in a in-house scrimmage?

Come on BTO, you're usually one of the better posters around here. Don't let your resentment towards Pearl blind you from the fact that he was successful. Hand picking certain games during his tenure to try to say otherwise is stretching. Every coach loses games during their tenure that they should win, but look at their overall success when determining their worth. Martin has won some he wasn't expected to win, and lost some he wasn't expected to lose, point is, he hasn't made the dance yet, and with the way this season is going, we won't make it this year. I hope he turns this thing around and is successful, but his lack of energy and enthusiasm doesn't give fans like me much hope.

I guess this is what gets me the most right now, it seems there's a large number of people saying that the season is basically over. You would think the were 4-7, not 7-4. The fact is, our RPI is respectable, we are in the first out group by Joe Lunardi, and if we go 13-6 the rest of the way this team is dancing. Now I don't know about you, but I think this team is very capable of going 13-6 the rest of the way, or better, and it starts Monday.

You mean the game played after our idiot AD stated he was being fired the night before.

Lmao oh, another excuse to defend Pearl, how shocking. Every coach deals with distractions, isn't it the coaches job to have his team prepared?

Isn't that what the Pearolites say about Martin and the NIT, he should have his team prepared no matter what? Shouldn't the same be expected the Saint Pearl?

Didn't we have around 20 wins last yr and not get in?

Pearl won enough for me to be satisfied....He made the NCAA every yr( even with distractions) made the sweet sixteen 50% of his time here, made an elite eight, was number one for a short time......If pearl came back and didnt meet my criteria for UT's coach then I would want him fired and to give the next guy the same opportunity.

I'm not saying we can't make it, I'm saying that I haven't seen a sense of urgency from Martin or this team. It's like they are just going through the motions, game in and game out. I would live to see a fire lit under them, and see them compete like everyone on here thought they would this year. But when I look at their lack of effort and energy, how are we supposed to believe that it will magically transform into enough to get us to the dance? Like I've stated, I want Martin to be successful, but he needs to wake up and stop sleep walking through the season, and hoping at the end we somehow get selected for the dance.

19 regular season. However, our RPI suffered because of a pretty weak SOS, this year our SOS is much better. It's why ole miss wasn't gonna get in until they went on their SECT run, their SOS was incredibly weak.

If we win 20 regular season games this year we will be dancing.

Gotcha. I just thought I would ask. I'm just worried that the lack of non conference wins or quality wins will bite us in the butt even though we may somehow get 20 wins.

I guess the reason I'm not panicking is because it's a trend, we start slow finish strong. Now I am the first to admit, we said there had to be a fast start for this team to get where we wanted, they haven't done that.

However, pre February 1st Martin is 21-20 after February 1st he's 18-8.

Right now we are 7-4, 13-7 seems very plausible on February 1st, and is hardly a best case scenario. So if we are 13-7 and finish strong like he has shown he usually does, you're looking at 20-10, or better, that would have us dancing.

If we get to 20 we will have some quality wins. Xavier very well could end up being a quality win also.

I wonder if CCM will have to deal with distractions in the tourney some day? Hope so.

You're right. I just hate the fact that he underperforms soo much early in the season.

I'm with you, it's frustrating.

I said though heading into the Xavier game, that game could be the difference between a 5/6 seed and a 7/8 seed. That's looking pretty likely at this point unfortunately.
