Martin Thus Far..

So then you believe Pearl is as good or better than Jay Wright, Bill Self, John Calipari, Billy Donovan, Thad Matta and Jamie Dixon? Tell that to any basketball expert and you would get laughed out of a room...

I like him better than Dixon and Calipari for sure. I would take Pearl before both of those guys. Not sure about Wright. I could not argue Self or Donovan. Those guys records are solid. Even though Pearl has done well against Donovan.

Calipari has made a final four and a championship game, as well as put multiple players into the NBA and he's the coach of the number one team in the country (for more than a day). Pearl has done none of those things. I understand some of your love for the man and I really enjoyed his time here other than the incident, but the way you and others elevate him into coaching's elite, when he didn't prove that in his time here, is simply mind-boggling to me....

I am probably the biggest Bruce Pearl fan of all time, but there is no doubt based on accomplishment there are many coaches that surpass Bruce. But it is an undisputable fact that he accomplished more at UT than any coach in the history of the school. No other UT coach even came close. Based upon my more than 40 years of watching UT basketball I believe that his accomplishments will not be matched in my lifetime. I base that on the fact that no one has matched those accomplishments in my 40+ years watching this program. I hope I am wrong but I gave up my season ticket because I believe that the administration at UT doesn't really care about athletics. Lets face it the Bruce Pearl hire was a fluke. No one knew that he would be so great. UT has never hired a proven top name coach in basketball and they never will. If Martin turned out to be a really great coach or if he is a flop either way he will be gone. If he is really great a true basketball school will hire him away from UT, if he is a flop UT will have to fire him when the attendance at TBA gets really bad. The only way Martin will stay at UT for the long run is if he is just competitive enough to keep people interested in the program. So UT basketball fans you have many more years of mediocre BB ahead of you.

I wont post on here every day, but I will post often enought to remind of my prediction about UT being mediocre for years to come.

Me tinks you are Stephen Pearl on here trolling pretending to be a Vols fan for 40+ years.

I will write you often enough to remind you that Coach Martin will be a good if not great coach. Equalling and possibly surpassing THE GREAT Bruce Pearl.

I did like Pearl and thought he was a pretty good coach but I will not say that he was great. In order to get that moniker he would have had to NOT CHEAT and stay at Tennessee longer than 6 years.
:hi:

Great post but you should understand your giving facts and reasoning with unreasoning people on this forum. They don't back up their statements with facts they just throw out a lot of crap and hope some of it sticks. This is one of the best post I have seen in this forum.

Did your worthlessness actually say this?

Here's some more facts. Within Donovan's first 6 years, he'd been to a National Championship game and a Sweet 16, and won 2 SEC Titles.

Bill Self: made an elite eight at Tulsa and then made an elite eight at Illinois, made an elite eight at Kansas and won a National Title all within his first 6 years at each of those schools.

Coach K: went 37-3 in his 6 year and lost in the National Title game.

Roy WIlliams: Had 2 Final Fours and a Sweet 16 in his first 6 years at Kansas. Only had 4 30 win seasons.

Rick Pitino: Took Louisville to a Final Four in year 4. Took over a UK team on probation and got them to an elite eight in year 6 followed by a NCAA Championship and a return trip to the Title game the following year.

Brad Stevens: At freaking Butler, has made 2 National Championship games in his first 4 years.

Bobby Knight: 141-31 in his first 6 years that featured a Title and another Final Four appearance.

In other words, there are numerous, numerous coaches that have been more successful than Pearl. Pearl's a good and not great coach.

You give billy Donovan and Mike K a lot of credit for their really good seasons but you have to also give as much credence to the years that they did not make the tournament-----twice foe billy Donovan and three straight years for Mike k.

I already stated Bill Self, Roy Williams, and Rick Pitino had better credentials than Bruce Pearl during his six years.

Now you are trying to bring retired coaches out to make a point lol those are excluded----you can't use John Wooden or Adolph Rupp either.

Brad Stevens will probably prove to be better but has not coached the six year period yet.

Yes and these basketball experts are as wrong as much as they are right....look at all the predictions through out the years.

Just deal with the facts and not people's opinions.

If you ask the slurpers to stick to facts you are asking to
be called their usual barrage of insults. We all know the list.

The six years argument is garbage. Pearl wasn't a head coach for six years. He also coached BCS level in the weakest conference available.

Sadly, he had to be fired, but Pearl was a top ten coach, even when you include last year which was an outlier for obvious reasons.

Why was it an outlier? Coaching is coaching, regardless of one's penchant for lying to the AA.

Six years is all we have to go by.........check out the rpi and SOS while he was here..... Coach pearl played anyone, anytime, and any where.

coach pearl lied and was fired for that reason...he did not cheat...the NCAA looked and looked and proved he ran a clean program which is why we received no further sanctions.

is breaking the established rules not cheating?

Cheating is doing something to gain an advantage....if we follow it that tightly there are no clean programs in the country bc every one of them has secondary violations

so visits to your house when it's not allowed and numerous impermissible phone calls by BP and his staff isn't trying to gain an advantage? Sure he's not buying players or using a pseudo-agent to recruit but to say "he ran a clean program" is a little dishonest

That's okay willie, as long as you realize it's just your opinion. Please follow all posts with JMHO and you won't catch as much FLAK.

There were 94 phone calls made over several months....the in home visit was by all committed players and a silly rule....both were secondary violations.......every coach in America has cheated that much.

There are no facts in your ridiculous argument as all of the coaches listed have more accomplishments than Pearl...

Slurpers is an interesting term to use when you're the one who is hanging on to a fired basketball coach that deserved his firing..
