Martin Was Recommended By Houston and Grunfeld

If he could coach, then why did his team just barely (and probably shouldn't have) make the tournament? His players were motivated by the media, got on a hot streak and have made the final 4.

they probably made the tourney because they played a tougher schedule that colorado, who played women's teams.

yeah, on second thought he made the final four/beat kansas because of luck. the media coached them.

So, if Martin fails here, will you say the same about him??

I'd say it's a shame it didn't work out, but I applaud the Administration for taking a chance on him instead of hiring a coach that we absolutely know for a fact would return us to mediocrity.

Fans at a school are going to be extremely disappointed when they throw a huge contract at him, and he is exposed as a fraud.

Diamond in the rough?
The more I read about him the more I like him.

You obviously missed our other debate. I think Byrd's a solid mid-major coach. Nothing more.

Only thing I missed is why your opinion of byrd means soooo much...

people that know him, imo, value his ability and his record speaks for itself...

basketball people know coaches. Fans not recognizing the name means squat

I doubt Grunfeld and Houston just happened on his team a couple times on ESPN and added his name to the list

How on earth do they even know him though?? Neither one played against him, and he was in the Big 10 for a long time. That's kind of the head scratcher I'm having with all this. Like I've said, I'll support him 100%, but I'm having trouble accepting the fact that we could only hire a coach from Missouri State with 3 years experience. We will see next season though.

In regards to what the committee looked at, I'm sure he was. If they don't have that game against Indiana State on ESPN, or play us tough this season, Martin will pretty much go unnoticed by us.

I've seen a lot of dumb things on this board, but this one ranks near the top. So Houston and Grunfield caught the game vs. us and vs. Indiana St., and were like man this may be a good coach. You are losing credibility, just stop why you are ahead.

If UT is making decisions based on recommendations of two ex's, then we have more problems than anyone can imagine.

If you disagree, that's fine. In the meantime, I'll continue to be happy that he's at Belmont.

same with anybody in a particular industry- they know their business. Fans didn't know Bruce before he was hired but the people in basketball did. Same with a lot of coaches

If he could coach, then why did his team just barely (and probably shouldn't have) make the tournament? His players, most recruited by Grant, were motivated by the media, got on a hot streak and have made the final 4.

Lost their best front court player and leading scorer. The front court was considered their weakness and it showed in the first half of the season.

There aren't many coaches at that age who can turn things around mid-season and develop an area of weakness into a complimentary strength for a quality set of guards.

The turning point was the bracket buster game against Wichita State. You could see them becoming a difficult team to play at that moment when they fed off the atmosphere at the Roundhouse to win a close game.

You don't end up where VCU is right now after their struggles in the first part of the season without quality coaching and leadership.

Why not?? I'm sure they just had their notebooks full of notes on the guy over his 10 year trek as an assistant and HC.

The hell? They lost that game against Indiana State on ESPN as a favorite! And you think that, plus a close loss to us, is what turned the committee on to him? Rick Byrd lost close to us, and you don't see us hiring him (despite your wishes).

He finished first this year in a good league after being 3-15 just two years ago. He was recommend by Ernie Grunfeld, who has a pretty nice track record. He didn't distract us from a poor season with a couple dazzling shooting performances this week. He's not the flavor of the month.

That's cool, but at least we were able to see Pearl coaching in the tournament with UW-M. Pearl took them to the S16, so we kind of knew what we were getting with him, and it was a lot easier to get excited about him. Martin, not so much, but we will see obviously.

According to 104.5 The Zone, Allan Houston and Ernie Grunfeld played a major role in recommending UT hire Cuonzo Martin.

Some may be surprised that Ernie jumped back to help UT after parting ways with Bruce Pearl.

We hired a very good basketball coach folks.
Those guys were okay, I guess, but I wonder what Steven Pearl thinks.

Crazy talk. You're acting as if two NBA executives would have done stuff like scout games Martin coached as an assistant at Purdue and as a head coach at Mo State.

You got any proof they had prior to that?? What is the background with Houston and Ernie, in regards to hiring Martin??

if you're looking for a pic of the 3 together then no one has one and you win. However if you're arguing that players, coaches and GM's don't know other basketball people then you're mistaken.

Bro the ONLY thing I disagree with is your statements of KNOWING and FOR SURE....

you have first hand knowledge same as others...you heard or you read...

that's my point...it's all a crap shoot when hiring any new coach...

and you stating that one is BETTER...is just an ASSUMPTION AND SPECULATION...

but mostly...we all hope this is the right decision for the players and the uni...
