Don't think Conyer or Goree are just 'fillers.' We had a huge db class last year and will have another one this year. We don't need to take guys just to take them. Staff is very high on Goree and Willie likes the tools Conyer possesses
I hope we don't stack them up too deep because that just opens the door to the portal. We need guys for at least 3 years

I'd rather risk losing some to the portal over being thin at any position. We definitely need to add to the DB room. If we can fix that issue we will be able to compete for national championships.

I've often wondered if that 2021 game at Kentucky gave DB recruits pause, thinking maybe Heupel's offense would mean that their defensive career would spent tackling running backs as Tennessee's opponents played time-of-possession to keep our offense on the sideline.

But coming out of that game with a Win, plus running up our stats on tackles-for-loss with an aggressive defensive philosophy, seems to have put that to rest.

With our offense's ability to force opponents to play catch up, we should soon become a destination school for DLs who want to rack up sacks, and DBs who want to rack up INTs.

I think they could use Boo in a variety of ways. Especially once we get more talent on the roster and aren’t having to rely so much on tempo to score and can make a sub or two on drives. He could get 8-9 carries a game and either be used between the tackles or as a pitch man on options. We could give him the ball on jet sweeps and push passes or on crossing routes in different air raid concepts and of course he would be a deep ball threat. We aren’t currently doing a lot of those things though. However I think, or at least I hope, we will see this offense evolve more once Nico takes over and so much of our passing offense isn’t based on just reading the safeties and the slot corner on one side of the field. It has worked great so far, but being able to take deep shots outside of switch routes on the perimeter gives you a lot more ways to attack the defense vertically
I'll have to disagree on some of that. Could be wrong, but...

First, I don't consider the tempo to be a temporary gimmick to get us into the win column. But more importantly, I think this defense has to have been designed from the day of Banks' hiring to be uniquely fitted to be the counterpart to our fast tempo offense. And if so, it follows that we are recruiting players that fit that unique defensive philosophy.

Change the offense, though, and you'll immediately have a defense that's mismatched in philosophy and personnel.

As for the offense evolving... Nico will be our first QB in this system to have the benefit of learning from an older QB who already knows the system. IIRC, Milton had only a few months in the system ahead of Hooker (or was it visa-versa?), so they were learning together directly from the coaches.

So maybe in his third year Nico might be ready to incorporate more of what Heupel's offense is capable of. But I don't see this offense "evolving" until defenses start showing they can stop it--with something other than supreme talent at each position, ala Georgia.

Hooker participated in spring practice in 2021, Milton did not. He arrived late summer.

I don’t think it’s necessarily a temporary gimmick to get us wins, but I think as we get more talented weapons and have a guy that is supposed to be a generational QB that we’ll start running a slightly different offense. We’ve already seen it evolve in the 2 years this staff has been here. I don’t think we ever start huddling up and snapping the ball with less than 10 seconds on the play clock consistently. I just think we will have too much talent to not sub guys in and out on drives. Right now we’re pretty much stuck running 11 personnel with the same guys throughout a drive most of the time. However we’re eventually going to get to the point where we have so many studs at skill positions on offense and hopefully such good QB play that we can spread the wealth around and play 5-6 WRs during meaningful downs

Please hold your breath waiting on that.

the issue with that strategy is that we are always going to be chasing to fill in the portal holes. we need to get to a place where we are stable and can just upgrade via the portal instead of relying on it for depth.

it will also allow us to recruit across the board instead of constantly having to go heavy on one position knowing that most will transfer.

I guess I just didn’t realize we had so many elite position coaches on our board.

Sure everyone has an opinion but we have some who are 100% convinced they know better than real coaches..

But, at least we’re talking football again..

It's pretty incredible.. if Heupel ever needs to replace one of his Coach's, he doesn't have to look far. The candidates are in abundance on here!

If Coach Heupel would just tap into the Volnation Keyboard Coaches Association, he probably would win a National Championship within two years. He's really missing the boat here :eek::eek::eek:

Time to get the DMV pipeline going.

What is this DMV of which you speak? …..and y’all need to do better than Dept of Motor Vehicles! I realize I’ve opened a can of worms, so good, clean, Sunday night after church responses are welcome, but I would like to know the actual meaning😁

Dc, Maryland, Virginia region of the country.

A lot of athletic talent has come from northern Virginia, DC, and Maryland (particularly central) through the years.
