Isn't that part f the point? If I was the member of a team that represented the citizens of a country...and if I wanted to make more money in a system where I was paid because people in that country tuned in to watch me play a game...I'm not sure I would be referring to a large percentage of those citizens' symbolic respect as that "****ing" thing, "and I'll probably never stand up or honor that place when it's being honored home or internationally".i think that is a really poignant observation on symbolism in a general sense. Symbolism can be anything we want it to be. The message of Lady Liberty is about the concept of America welcoming the cast-offs from other societies. I think the majority still get warm fuzzies about that high minded concept. The percentages drop like a UF football player to the turf when the other team is moving the ball efficiently once the details of that concept are discussed.

Where did the French get that quote?honest question.SoL - “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free. The wretched refuse of your teeming shore."
Trump and his fanboys - Give me your best and brightest, their spouses can't come, and the rest need to stay in their banana republics and make their countries better.
So far today you've started threads going after immigrants and homosexuals. Can't wait to see what you have in store for us tomorrow!

We are paying the societal cost because the concept symbolized in the SoL is running headfirst into the corrupt politics of the day. We cannot hold the concept AND support the expanded safety net. Either the concept remains and the socialism abates or the concept wanes and the socialism remains. Sobering are the circumstances our politicians created for us because we could not trust in our own freedom.SoL - “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free. Too deep for me.We are paying the societal cost because the concept symbolized in the SoL is running headfirst into the corrupt politics of the day. We live in a time when so many people are either highly sensitive or they just like to complain about anything they can. I have watched the replay of the famous USA VS USSR hockey game from the 1980 Olympics 5 or 6 times on YouTube over the years. ... Goalie Jim Craig (who stopped 36 of 39 shots - most of the 3rd period was played right in front of his net), was famously draped in an American flag during the post-game celebration and asked "Where's my dad?" as ABC cameras approached him. Upon spotting his father, he dropped the flag on the ice (it was later picked up by a fan who sold it at auction). It was an accident and amazingly, nobody complained about it back then or interpreted it to be disrespectful. The platforms that the internet has provided has given everyone a public voice and also created a culture of whining over the silliest little things.I could careless if she insults Trump, it's the cool thing to do if your a celebrity and I haven't said anything about the other 2,000 so called celbs voicing their opinions. It also has nothing to do with her sexuality so nice try again. Look at her during her speech and the event in NYC yesterday. She is always wanting the attention on her and every time they tried to honor one of her teammates she had to be front and center dancing and acting like a idiot. She's an attention whore plain and simple. For the record I think the whole dropping the flag was an ACCIDENT when they was caught up in the celebration but it still shouldn't happen, especially after you have protested our anthem and blasted our president and country.
I am not a Trumper but I see the immigration system is needing an overhaul. If we are to remain viable as a nation, we need to be more selective in who immigrates and how they do so. We have to make the adjustments because the politics have backed us into that corner. Remove the decades of bad policy. Make America a land of opportunity again instead of a land of oppression, and I am happy to return to the idealism of SoL.Everyone wants the US to be the world's medic but takes issue when people remind that in order to do so, the US needs to put our own oxygen mask on first before tending to everyone else.
