Memphis......I got two words for yah

Well Cal wanted it in Nashville. But I don't blame UT. Home games are what make the series.

I recall that, but the series contract was signed so it'd be dumb for us to have agreed to change then.

I'm saying last year when Pastner ended it, did he tell UT, no more home/home...if you want to continue the series we can llay in Nashville every year.

I don't recall that offer being made, I just remember him up and ending it.

I'm from Memphis but I joined the military after high school which lead to me being stationed in Fort Meade, Maryland. I had plans to attend the University of Memphis but i couldn't sale my house in Odenton, MD which lead to me attending the University of Maryland at College Park. I also had a nice cushy contractor job as a network engineer which was flexible being that i was a full time student.

You at least picked the better school to attend. Most people are fans of the school that they at least attended.

I'm sure all UTk football/Basketball fans attended the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. :loco:

No, but I doubt they hang out on another rival's board more than their own team's board.

Dies Louisville or surrounding area really produce much talent?

Who has Memphis pulled of note from KY?

Serious question, because I don't know.

Louisville is a metro area. It hasn't produced much recently that I'm aware of, but that doesn't mean it can't. More people= more bball players, generally.

No Pastner didn't suggest Nashville. Pastner didn't want to play Ole Miss either until the new AD told him one day that it was scheduled. Ole Miss dropped football until Memphis would play in basketball.

RC Johnson suggested Nashville.

I don't want to play Ole Miss in basketball. They're completely apathetic, even for an SEC school.

Pastner nor Calipari wanted to play the series. They did it out of the respect for the state to have a GOOD in-state rivalry. Now that Cuonzo is trying to come into Memphis and recruit Pastner has decided that he does not want to continue the series with them. Cuonzo would do the same thing if Knoxville was putting out the talent every year.

Now for the game...

This is going to be an awesome game. Expect it to be very physical! If Tennessee can keep the score under 50 (like every game), then they will have a good shot at winning.

I expect Memphis to win this one at TBA by 13+

Went through Memphis today for the 1st time as I am going to Houston, Texas and all I can say is GO VOLS!!! I miss knoxville and east Tennessee...

Quit acting like Memphis Tiger High is above everyone in basketball. I don't care what type of talent they have on their current team or are bringing in they don't beat anybody will probably lose Friday to UT and aren't even ranked in the Top 100 in the RPI because they haven't played or beaten anyone of substance apparently in 4 years. Obviouslly you would rather play Southern Miss, Rice, East Carolina and Tulane every year. Ole Miss is a big step up from that. So don't knock Ole Miss. Ole Miss is a tough SEC team that you want to avoid because you say they are apathetic.

On paper Memphis should be undefeated and ranked #1 or #2 in the country. They supposedly have Top 5 talent so yes your prediction could or should be accurate. But unfortunately the game isn't played on paper and Josh Pastner is the Head Coach at Memphis. Might be closer than 13 but on paper and considering the Vols don't have Maymon I would agree. But once again the game isn't played on paper and Memphis is coached by Josh Pastner. But on paper.....

So I assume you root for Memphis? Vol football fan and UM basketball? Based on tone of your post. Martin is not doing anything different than any prior UT coaches recruiting Memphis.

UM needs this W a hell of a lot more than UT, even trying to argue otherwise would make you look ridiculous.

Both need it bad, but saying UM needs a win "a hell of a lot more than UT" is just flat incorrect. This game very well could be the difference in making the field and making a return trip to the NIT for UT. UM will be in the tournament field regardless of this game simply due to their name recognition and their ability to run roughshod over a crappy league shedule.

Good points. Plus a loss at home is an RPI crusher for UT.

This isn't exactly true. But it is true that Calipari wanted the series dropped or moved to a neutral site. When RC (AD of UM at the time) cancelled the basketball series, Hammy grew a pair and dropped the football series. This put a huge hole in the UM budget since they jack up the Memphis home football games with UT and sell 50K seats at $80 per.

At UT basketball is the undercard sport and at Memphis football is the undercard sport.

UT needs to play Memphis in basketball and Memphis needs to play UT in football. It benefits each undercard sport resepctively even though there is nothing to gain for Memphis basketball playing UT nor UT football playing Memphis.

Actually, it is not that important to UT. It is important for UM because they will not have another chance at this type of RPI win the rest of the year. Based on the RPI standings I am looking at, they play only 4 more games against teams that are currently in the Top 100 and that includes Harvard at 68 and Xavier at 95. Southern Miss is the only conference team. UM also doesn't currently have a win in the top 100 RPI. Even with a loss to UT, you are right that they will most likely get in, they will be looking at another 8-9+ seed because of the number of quality wins.

Even though there are some bad teams in the SEC, UT still has opportunities against Florida, Kentucky, Missouri, and even Ole Miss, LSU, and A&M are currently hovering around the 50 mark. UT also has wins against Witchita State at 17 and UMass at 35.

So, Memphis needs this to highlight their resume as a Top 50 type win. Otherwise, their chances are few and far between.

Agree with Vol Gee. But Memphis can't get into the field with a bad RPI so if Memphis loses to UT they are in trouble as far as making the tourney. They will have to win their conference tourney to get in. They may have to anyway irregardless of the outcome Friday nite. And its possible they could lose to both Xavier and UT. But they don't want to play quality games so they have backed themselves into this corner. Go Vols.

No arguement that our conference schedule offers much more opportunity than theirs. But they may lose one conference game. The only problem Memphis has is the conference tourney was moved to Tulsa so they don't get that at home as usual.

Problem is, we can't just predictably go through the schedule with wins as favorites and loses as dogs. We'll need some upsets along the way if we drop this one. Pick up a win here and it makes our resume that much better without any upsets.

Why does Tennessee need to play Memphis in basketball? Its Memphis that doesn't schedule anyone non conference to help themselves out RPI wise. Tennessee plays in the SEC we don't need to play Memphis. Its better for UT to play Ole Miss and Miss St. which always has a better RPI than Memphis and as long as Pastner is coach both will have better teams.

Well, their schedule this year was actually decent. They just haven't capitalized. They played Minnesota and VCU in the Bahamas and lost and then got Louisville at home. They beat Ohio at home, which should be a solid mid-major, but Ohio has disappointed so far and will have a hard time cracking the Top 100 the rest of the way. Evidently, they had a hard time scheduling because of questions about the new Big East schedule. But, just like UT, you have to find some mid majors willing to play at home that are better than Top 150. Samford, UT Martin, and Austin Peay for Memphis, and Kennesaw State, Presbyterian, and Western Carolina won't do anything for you.

Tennessee is a better team with kids like Stokes, Bradshaw, Prince, and Harris. Having the annual basketball tilt gets us visibility with good players. Visibility never hurts.

Well, it doesn't hurt as long as you don't get laughed off the court and embarrassed.

The long standing theory is that UT needs to play Memphis in basketball for recruiting purposes.
