Memphis lost by 15 to Marshall

You know what they say about opinions, everyone has one. Facts are a whole lot more fun:

Memphis

1973 NCAA runner up
1982-84 Sweet 16
1985 Final Four*
1992 Elite 8
1995 Sweet 16
2005-2007 Elite 8
2008 Runner Up*
2009 Sweet 16

UTK

1967 Sweet 16
1981 Sweet 16
2000 Sweet 16
2007-2008 Sweet 16
2010 Elite 8

Even with the vacated Final Fours, Memphis has a far superior NCAA success over the same time period. Question is, if Memphis fans have nothing to talk about, what the hell are UTK fans crowing about?
A Memphis fan started bragging with the generic garbage about Memphis's "history" and how Tennessee "doesn't even come close to touching Memphis". Tennessee fans responded. When it comes down to it:

Memphis + Tennessee = 0 NCAA men's basketball championships

Why Memphis fans feel the need to constantly beat their chests over two(*) 2nd place finishes is beyond me. I mean really, congrats, Memphis has lost a few times more/higher than Tennessee in the tournament.

No UT fan that has a clue is going to dispute that Memphis has had far greater success in the tourney than we have. However, the fact remains that your team is currently a train wreck, and many of us enjoy watching it.

16-5 with a 33 RPI by a team led by 5 freshmen. Yea, real train wreck.

see you make a valid point... IF UT didnt have a winning record against memphis, and memphis didnt ALSO talk about football like they have a reason to.

You're right. I expect to see Marshall competing for the Final Four this year.

Losing to Marshall (51 RPI) on the road is not as bad as losing to Oakland (76) at home, USC (81) at home, Charleston (93) at home, or Charlotte (191) on the road. This is the same Marshall team that soundly beat WVU on the road.

Of the Tigers' 5 losses, only SMU (225) on the road is a "bad" loss. The other 4 teams that beat Memphis RPIs are 1, 3, 17, 51.

You can keep your winning record against Memphis. You know who also has a winning record against Memphis? Western KY and Xavier. Intelligent Memphis fans, like myself, could care less about head to heads. It's how you do in March that defines your basketball program. Period.

That was a pretty loss against Tulsa tonight. Keep thinking your team isn't garbage.

My question is, if Memphis is far superior to us in basketball like their fans claim, why do they feel the need to come "prove" it to us Vol fans on a Vol message board?

I can't imagine a Vol fan posting on a Belmont board citing NCAA tourney records about how the Vols are clearly superior to Belmont. The only motivation for such behavior is insecurity. Insecurity in this case because Tennessee has owned Memphis for a number of years head to head, and insecurity because of Memphis' glaring lack of a signature win, combined with the growing realization that the team won't win CUSA, they won't make the NCAA tourney this year.

Or maybe it has something to do with the fact that Mr. Clean can't win with all the over-hyped recruits Memphis fans got their hopes up for during the absolutely embarrassing season they had last year.

It's highly likely we get Jarnell Stokes out of Memphis for 2012. After his good friend Cam Clear signed with the Vols.

I believe they were both sitting behind the Tigers bench last night. Cam with a Tennessee hat on.

Why should we be "embarrassed" by a 24-10 record on the heels of Calipari's scorched earth departure? The fact is, Memphis has had to basically restart the program from scratch. 40-16 to date considering the state of the program in April of 2009 (4 scholarship players), is remarkable. "Mr. Clean" will have us in the tournament in the next year while your team will be without it's coach, sitting at home on probation.

yes, you should be embarrassed for losing to a sorry Tulsa team at home. Said Tulsa team will be firing their coach for inability to win shortly.

I haven't seen Pastner competently coach a game yet.

Well, he's learning on the job. If he could just get the players to listen to him instead of laughing at him. We don't really know if he can coach or not, since he players just play street ball.

I would be embarrassed to get kicked out of the second round of the NIT. But given the fact that we've been in the tournament for what, 5 years straight? I don't recall something like that happening to us since I started watching basketball 3-4 years ago. (I'm 20 years old by the way, before you accuse me of being a "fair-weather fan")
