Yeah, Cal lies awake at night concerned about the football team not having direct access to a major bowl. It's just killed his recruiting.

You automatically assumed Memphis cares about Basketball only.

That is 125% not true.

By the way. Cal = Coach. Cal does not = Fan.

I'm sure he doesn't care. I'm also sure Memphis fans would be thrilled to have a football team like UT's. And I'm sure if they did, they'd care about that sport quite a bit.

Tennessee fan. Always have been, always will be. However, when among other things, people accuse Cal of being sleazy while UT is being coached by an attention addict/NCAA informant, I think it makes UT fans look bad. Ask their peers who they have respect for.

I don't give a crap what Bruce's peers think of him as long as he continues to develop the Tennessee basketball program, improves the teams, and represents UT well...

And no I don't think Cal is sleazy.

Memphis is a basketball town. Always has been, always will be. Cincinnatians love football. However, UC football is generally an afterthought. Some cities prefer hoops to pigskins.

Seems off topic. Who introduced Coach Cal to this thread, anyway?

Memphis is not nearly as much of a 'basketball' town as you'd like to think. Their 'devotion' to The Grizzlies (which is ridiculously terrible), and their lack of support for UMemphis through lean years prove that accusation false.

Memphis would love to have a football team to brag about.

Correct, but Memphis has plenty of football fans. They would be jumping on that bandwagon if UM hired some awesome coach that turned the football program around.

Volbreaker seems to have some obsession with my relationship with Memphis basketball. I'm simply pointing out why I start nuking the clueless, homer portion of our fanbase when they start spewing silliness about the program in the Bluff City. Cal was simply an example. Another would be our fans calling Joey Dorsey a "thug" while Duke Crews is on our roster.

While Dorsey is no thug, he did make it rain at a club.

Duke just likes that wacky weed.

Volbreaker's the kind of guy who makes a bet, then feels the need to modify it. I, on the other hand, stand by my wagers.

Also, my examples were in no way silliness. They were ALL reasons I have heard straight from the horses mouth (Memphis fans) multiple times.

1. Correct. Neither guy is a thug.
2. Why would an already less than affluent populace pay NBA prices to watch the garbage the Grizz have generally put on the floor. When they had playoff caliber teams, people showed up. When they're going 18-64, not so much. That does make them bad fans, it makes them discerning.

You're the type of guy that would boycott UT games if we had a bad season.

Edit: People from the city of Memphis (not just UMemphis fans) have proven time and time again they refuse to support a professional league in their city. I have no idea way. It annoys me to no end. I know the grizzlies will be gone as soon as they finish their contract with the city.

It pains me, because I love the Grizzlies... even when they suck.

I imagine if you cruise around a Memphis message board you will find equally ridiculous assertions made about Tennessee.

I think it has more to do with the fact that Memphis for a big city supporting a professional team, has a higher poverty rate than most NBA franchise cities. I could be wrong about that though. I don't think they send out Season Tix with the Welfare checks.

1. I've never boycotted UT games. One, I'm fortunate enough that the cost of tickets, etc. isn't prohibative to me. However, there were plenty of nights in the Houston and Peterson Errors that I chose a game on ESPN over going to the arena. Fans are under no obligation to subject themselves to a crappy product.
2. I could care less what is said on a Memphis board. My degrees aren't from Memphis. Nothing they say reflects on me.

Poverty has nothing to do with attendance at the games. the FedEx Forum is in a great area of downtown, and there are plenty of people that are able to spend some of their disposable income on a game or two (or 41) per season. They just refuse to.
