Mercer Bears

I wonder if Lamb's son Taylor will transfer to Mercer or wait his turn at App State.

Part of their success is probably because they are recruiting with the knowledge that they are about to upgrade in conferences to a scholarship league, but they are playing this season in a non-scholarship league. It's still impressive for a first-year team, but it does help that Mercer has been able to recruit differently than fellow PFL-newbie Stetson.

That's a little overstated. The announcement of Mercer's move to the SoCon came well after signing day, so I don't think it's had an impact on the field yet. What has mattered is that Mercer went out and hired a quality head coach and fired up the program two years ago and has two full recruiting classes as well as two Spring Practices under their belt.

Friend who plays for Mercer said Posey would probably be transferring there from UT. Georgia kid, makes sense. Would be a great addition for Mercer.

Are players on scholarship this season? I figure they're not eligible for the league title if that's the case, and they may not be eligible anyway as a new member.

Yeah, I figured the promise of scholarship football in the SoCon was driving this. I didn't know that was announced after Signing Day.

And for today's trick . . . they knocked off a Big East school in basketball.

I did not get to listen to yesterday's game broadcast but the box score and drive summary show a lot of turnovers for the Bears in yesterday's road loss to Marist. I'm gonna assume that youth & enthusiasm ran into experience & discipline with a predictable result, which is something that I assumed would happen much more often in year 1 than it has. I'm still super excited about the program and would be even if they were 2-9 instead of 9-2. I can hardly wait for this Saturday so I can get down to Maconga and let these guys know how much I appreciate the fun and excitement they've added to my Saturdays this Fall.

You coming just for football or are you doing the basketball game at noon as well?

I was there fri and sat but did not go to bball. Football was enough. Great ending to a great season. They let the fans walk on the field and huddle around the team after the final whistle. Already looking forward to next year.

Set a Division 1 record for most wins in a season for a new program.

Annual Bears takedown of an SEC program now complete.

Just listened to the second half. This group of Seniors is absolutely amazing and it's definitely not a fluke anymore. They've now beaten Ole Miss, Tennessee, Alabama, Florida State, Ga Tech and Valpo.

...and to have Marshall Henderson completely choke away two free throws and then rain a 3 over him at the buzzer for the win might just be the best thing I've seen in basketball so far this year.

Supposedly they had a very competitive recruiting class. Judging by the film Ive seen of them from last year, they will have a very tough year next year. At least in conference, their non conference schedule will be Non D1s Im sure.

They won 10 games. I'm not sure there's very much bad film of them from last year.

Definitely have to get bigger though.

Yeah they played a weak schedule compared to the socon. They don't appear to be physically ready.

The transition to SoCon is going to be tough and they'll struggle at times running a bunch of underclassmen out there. How much have you actually seen them though? They actually surprised me from an athletic standpoint last year.

Everybody knows the transition to SoCon is going to be tough and they'll struggle at times running mostly Freshmen and Sophomores out there. How much have you actually seen them? I didn't really expect much out of a startup program, but they looked surprisingly athletic to me. If nothing else, they've got a QB.

There is a lot of film out there on them. Im not saying they wont be good in a few years, I just don't think next year will be a very good year for them. I see them at 1 or 2 conference wins.

I guess I'm just having a hard time buying that anybody is spending time watching "film" on Mercer. I've got season tickets and I don't even want to watch it. :)

How much can you really tell about a team based on YouTube highlights?

When a team is glaringly deficient you can tell. But regardless of that, look at their schedule. Sure 10-2 is great, but they didn't play ANYONE. I don't even think those teams offer scholarships that they were playing. They got blown out by Marist and San Diego. They have a long way to go.

They definitely have a long way to go. They're a startup program. The saving grace is that with App State and Ga Southern gone, it's not your father's SoCon.
