I didn't get around to posting after the opener last Thursday. Headed down to the inaugural Socon game this weekend. Looking forward to the celebration Friday night and a full day of frivolity before the late kickoff.

I just got back from the game. They lost, but I've got to say, I was completely shocked at how well they matched up with an established SoCon team like Furman. I expected them to be overmatched and outclassed, but they really had a shot at winning and it didn't really look like a fluke.

It was a fun game to watch. #1 receiver for Furman is very good player. John Russ and the defense kept us in it. The turnover for a TD was tough. There was an obvious size difference although it looked like the coaches offset it pretty well with substitutions. Great crowd even with the humidity that followed the afternoon rainshower.

Yeah. That blown up screen that turned into a pick 6 was the killer. Again though .... I couldn't believe how Mercer was able to run the ball and generate a consistent pass rush all night long. I kept thinking of the Chattanooga homer from earlier in this thread that pretended he had reviewed "film" and acted like SoCon football was the NFC West.

3-1 headed to VMI. Wins could get scarce from here on out but I'm hoping that Furman was the best team we'll see this season and we may take a few SoCon games.

Lost to Samford on the road. We scored very late and made a 2 point conversion to draw within a field goal but we couldn't recover the on side kick. Great effort by the Bears though.

Not counting chickens but Mercer is up 21-0 on Peay in the first quarter.

edit: now 28-0 in 1st.

Lost to Western Carolina 35-21. WCU held a two score lead most of the way. WCU had big athletic running QB and RB who really hurt the Bears whenever they got into the second level. WCU also had at least one really tall and fast WR who could get above and behind Bears DBs. Bears had some costly turnovers as well. Overall it was not a bad performance by the Bears.

We played UTC to within a TD today. Mocs had a 21 point lead at one point in the third but we had a chance to tie with a couple of minutes left and we missed two tosses to the right corner of the end zone, one a little high and one a little long. Good job by the Bears. It was my first trip to Finley Stadium, which seemed to be a decent facility given the size of the school and level of competition. We had our alumni tailgate at the brewery across from the north entrance which was incredibly convenient.

Coming to Clarkesville this Saturday. Will be my first trip to APSU. Looking forward to a great afternoon of football.

Enjoy it man. Wish I'd known a little sonner, could of given you some "box seats" on the house. If you like a good greasy hamburger. There's a local spot right across the street from campus called Johnnys big buger. It's a local fan favorite. If your looking something a little nicer there's another local place downtown called blackhorse. They make their own beer there "red ale" is the best and you got to get the beer cheese dip.
