Mercer Bears

I think people understand that they've made the jump from Pioneer to Socon faster than anyone expected but the opportunity was there and they had to take it. Mercer did play a low level of competition, including some start up programs, but nobody can forget that it was the first time we've played tackle football since 1942. I don't care who we played. 10-2 felt pretty good for a program that I expected to struggle to win a game or two all season. Preseason I was really hoping not to be 0-12 but had prepared myself not to be disappointed if that was the record. Jim Cole and Coach Lamb have done a great job and I'm looking forward to seeing us play some of the regional schools that we used to see for other sports in the TAAC era.

Just beat Fla Gulf Coast to win the A-Sun and punch their ticket to the tournament. They'll get a14 or 15 seed and drive somebody crazy in the first round.

Yep. Great senior led team. They'll give a 2 or 3 seed all they can handle in the 1st round. Congrats

Listened on I heart radio. I'm glad for them. It seems like every year we had a good team we'd run into a Charleston or Georgia State or Belmont. Lots of runner up seasons since 85.

USC Upstate should have beat them in the semi finals.....
It was nip and tuck but I'm not sure you can say "should have". If mercer hits the front end of a 1 and 1 in the last :30 of regulation, they go up by at least 4 and it's over. Instead, they missed and Upstate hit a little bit of a prayer for a 3 to tie.

They get Duke - in Raleigh - in the opening round. They'll likely get savaged, but I'm really glad they get to play an opponent like that.

From the coach on down, it's just such a great group of guys. I just hope they play them tough and remember it proudly.

We had better be on our game if we play them. They are a really good team and also well displined on defense

You just can't overrate the impact of playing 7 Seniors in the rotation. They'll be a tough out for anybody.

This I agree with. But if we play like we are playing today then we would possible be able to beat them

Ain't much better than taking a three hour liquid lunch on a picture perfect first full day of Spring to watch you alma mater pull off the upset of the tourney. Being the bear.

If we play like this, we'll beat Mercer like a rented mule.

For Mercer to win one or more of the following will have to happen:
1. Vols have a bad day
2. Bears can't miss 3 point shots
3. Refs call a tight game and don't let the Vols bump Mercer out of the paint.

Today was not a fluke where Duke played like crap and the Bears had the game of their lives. Bears missed several free throws and relatively unchecked field goals in the first half and Duke shot 17 threes. The refs could've bailed Duke out but didn't, thankfully.

Congrats Mercer fans on a great win. The better "team" certainly prevailed this afternoon. Normally I would wish you all future success, but not for Sunday. Hopefully I will be able to attend. Congrats again on a big win for what seems to be a first class program.

Nice tournament showing for the Bears. This should help Jim Cole shake a few more shekels from us to help keep the football program flush.
