Michael Sam, Missouri DE, Is Gay

Too bad most don't understand this.

It just doesn't compute for some people, I've known many gay people over the years and the big bad secret is that they're just people trying to enjoy things people enjoy. But oh noooooo, we can't have that, we have to de-humanize and boil them down to JUST their sexuality. It's stupid and frankly its backwards thinking, if you just replace "gay" with "colored" this conversation could have taken place back in the 50s.

The most recent research on homosexuality points to epigenetics.

Yeah I can't find anything pointing to that, maybe epigenomics. But these are still instances where ones environment is playing a part in one's development.

ongoing as of 2013, uses the following definition: "Epigenetics is an emerging frontier of science that involves the study of changes in the regulation of gene activity and expression that are not dependent on gene sequence. For purposes of this program, epigenetics refers to both heritable changes in gene activity and expression (in the progeny of cells or of individuals) and also stable, long-term alterations in the transcriptional potential of a cell that are not necessarily heritable. While epigenetics refers to the study of single genes or sets of genes, epigenomics refers to more global analyses of epigenetic changes across the entire genome."[20]

In 2008, a consensus definition of the epigenetic trait, "stably heritable phenotype resulting from changes in a chromosome without alterations in the DNA sequence", was made at a*Cold Spring Harbor*meeting

I linked a couple of articles I've read below. There is another study somewhere along the same lines that links increased fecundity in the female family members of gay men. Interesting stuff.

New Insight into the (Epi)Genetic Roots of Homosexuality | TIME.com

Homosexuality ultimately a result of gene regulation, researchers find | Fox News

Read them both, Time pretty brief not much to it, however Fox news went into some detail, but in the end I don't believe they know just yet whether it's a learned or innate trait or some combination of the two.

I'm so sick of people like you. I hate having to cater to the lowest common denominator. Equating homosexuality with beastiality is asinine and ignorant. We are talking about human beings, they aren't animals, criminals, deviants or sadists. It's about letting people love who they want to love, two people connecting and sharing that love with each other, you know... like everyone else does. Why is it so difficult to understand that it's not about sex or sexual intercourse, their sexuality does not define them. Being gay simply means you are attracted to members of the same sex, it doesn't make you a sexual deviant. ffs

Duuuude....

One, I don't think Sam was saying he's intellectually homosexual.

Homo-sexual. He and everyone else knew what he meant when he said HE wanted to be the NFL's first openly gay man.

2. Sexuality shouldn't be an issue in sports.

3. I shouldn't be judged by you for not being open arms and shed tears bc I'm sensitive to another man sensitive sexuality.

4. I think homosexual sex is gross. MY opinion. Don't respect it? Then Don't think I'm gonna respect yours.

5. This announcement only pits people against each other and backs fans and the NFL into a corner.

6. And jut because accepting. Homosexuality is "the thing" to do right now doesn't give anyone the right for reverse discrimination either.

Check your d**n selves and value other peoples opinions as much as you want yours respected.

I don't care of he's gay. I don't care where he puts it. But he should have kept it to himself or teammates. It does nothing but create problems and make everyone feel awkward.

We are so afraid of society looking down on people with values they stand by.

I'm not a bigot. I accept people are gay. But I don't have to embrace it like I love their choice.

Gays are too damn sensitive and makes everyone who backs them look like sensitive whiney little p*****s too.

Who efn cares? Let gays be gays. But don't socially enforce others to accept it or go against their own belief system in order to appease some homosexuals selfish need for attention and drama.

Sure. There is nothing conclusive at this time, I just think this research makes a lot of sense. Being gay myself and 100% convinced my sexuality is innate, I am intrigued by research into the root cause.

There is an awful lot in the nfl that is not football related that gets a ton of attention. Rex Ryan's foot fetish anyone? Interviews asking Aaron Rodgers if he likes women?

Why would he feel the need to come out? Why wouldn't he want to come out and clear the air? The truth can be very liberating and it would be nice to not have to keep it a secret. Think about this, Tom Brady can run around and be spotted with Gisele with no big moral issues or surprise. Other players can be out with their girlfriends with no issues. Now what if this dude doesn't come out and he is spotted kissing a man or holding hands with one at the mall? That would create an ugly uproar that this announcement arguably prevents. Why would this guy have to hide his significant other from the public when everyone else can do so freely?
Personally I dont want to hear about rex ryans foot fetish either.

I like gay people..I find two women kissing etc.. Very hot...

Oh we r talking about two guys.. Sorry wrong thread ..lol

Who cares he came out because everyone knew he was gay but his agent told him to come out so people on vn would fight about it n then if he doesn't get drafted he will say because he is gay n not because he suxs.. In more ways then one.

Its strictly marketing by his agent..using the media to make more money.

5. This announcement only pits people against each other and backs fans and the NFL into a corner...

What opposing sides are being pitted against one another?

How are fans and the league being backed into a corner?

I don't care of he's gay. I don't care where he puts it. But he should have kept it to himself or teammates. It does nothing but create problems and make everyone feel awkward.

If someone feels awkward, is that Sam's fault? Or is it a hangup that the person feeling awkward either needs to address or get over?

Oh yeah, definitely open minded right here.

Why should Sam, or any gay/lesbian person for that matter, hide who they are to appease the masses who are either scared of them or think that gay sex is "gross"?

I hear the arguments both ways, I have a harder time believing the innate version, but I could easily be wrong. I think maybe one day scientists will be able to take us down the path of our make up and show us how how each individual is different from every other individual and of course where we are the same. I have always been a to each their own and always will be as long as I am not being made to change.

Honestly, I believe that because it makes the most sense to me.

Why would someone choose to be gay in this country?

We're on this world for a finite amount of time and life is already stressful enough without worrying about if Debbie does Amy or if Steve does Adam. Everyone needs to relax and enjoy the ride.

Obviously u have not been to the old city at night....why does anyone choose some of the crazy things they do?

I'm not a bigot. .

I think you are ...
"A bigot: someone who, as a result of their prejudices, treats or views other people with fear, distrust, hatred, contempt, or intolerance on the basis of a person's opinion, ethnicity, race, religion, national origin, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, socioeconomic status, or other characteristics."

Last summer, Sam came out to his teammates. Some of the 2013 Tigers had known Sam was gay for years. It was news to others. However long his teammates had known, it was news that didn’t travel very far past that locker room.

Was his teammates told to keep it quiet?

“Telling the world I’m gay is nothing,” Sam said in interviews with ESPN, the New York Times, and Outsports.

Then why tell the world? So he could be the first openly gay NFL player?
