Mike Farrell On Tennessees Recruiting...

This was my favorite part:

"The Vols finished in the top 25 last year"

hahaha yea we just barely squeaked in the top 25 at 9TH!

I see a lot of teams between the #24 Tennessee class and the #10 Clemson class that appear to not be all that different in terms of numbers and star ratings.

How many years did our staffs go without recruiting defensive tackles? I watched year after year go by. Kiffin was looking to bring in a few more good ones, but that didn't happen. Now we are playing DEs and walk-ons. The good news is that we do have a good O-line forming up. But Dooley must close with high quality DTs who can play immediately if we expect to compete four quarters and win games.

Flordia is loaded, and has been with 5* and 4* players; have been for years; head coach for a while. How could they possibly be doing as badly as they are this year?

Of course, some of those teams making all the noise probably do not have one 5*, and most likely not any 4* players.

I trust Dooley more than stars.

How many stars are in Auburn's backfield? You know, the new #1 team in the BCS?

Who cares? If we finish 20th (we could easily finish much higher than that, just hypothetically) and we address our needs on the line I will be very happy. When you have serious line needs like we do you aren't gonna dazzle when it comes to stars.... it's just a numbers game. There are 101 4* high school offensive and defensive lineman in the country this year, and most football teams are carrying 30-35 scholarship OL/DL a piece or more. Just not enough to go around to make all the star gazers happy. As opposed to last year when there were 47 4* or higher WR's in the country last year, and teams are only carrying 8-10 wideouts.

Point is the class might not be glamorous, but they are out there getting the job done.

those that think half the 3*s of this class are getting bumped up and that dooley and his staff have a sixth sense about diamonds in rough that all the other coaching staffs don't have are the same ones who thought this year's team would go 8-4 or better

Before the days of Message Boards, Rivals, et al, how in the world did we ever use to figure out whether a class was good or not? Other than lining 'em up and playing the games...

If these recruiting gurus knew anything about football, they would be coaching instead of working for peanuts and trying to convince people to buy their recruting magazine!

IMO this class will not blow anyone away and will not be highly ranked. However, the guys that are committed are class acts and hard working. there will be some break out stars from this class and it is a solid foundation to build on. OLine and DLine prospects are extremely hard to figure out and put a star on them therefore our class will be ranked lower than it should be. GBO

Good points. I think Dooley is focused on filling the gaps we have on the lines, especially the defensive side. I think his strategy the first year or two is to rebuild the depth in the trenches with good, solid players that will be here for 3-4 years.

Some of the comments from the visiting players on Saturday reflected their belief that when they come next year, they will help provide that depth and let us play four full quarters with better rotations. They didn't think our team gave up, they just got tired in the second half.

Truth is NOBODY knows how this class will turn out. In 2 to 3yrs from now then we will know exactly how good this class is and if CDD and Co are good coaches and evaluators of talent or if they need to be canned.

Correct.

There are plenty of other standards one can use as well, and all of them point to a mediocre recruiting class by SEC standards. Few of our recruits have in-state offers from quality BCS programs; most of our recruits are being skipped over by the elite programs; and most of our recruits are not rated high by any recruiting analyst, not just Rivals.
