Mike Farrell On Tennessees Recruiting...

There are plenty of other standards one can use as well, and all of them point to a mediocre recruiting class by SEC standards. Few of our recruits have in-state offers from quality BCS programs; most of our recruits are being skipped over by the elite programs; and most of our recruits are not rated high by any recruiting analyst, not just Rivals.

so the recruiting is worrying you?

Yes. I don't mind players being 3* as much as other warning signs like -- not being recruited by their in-state banner program, not being recruited by regional powers, not being recruited by coaches who traditionally are good at evaluating their position of talent (TE at Georgia, LB at Alabama, DB at Florida, et al), and not fitting traditional athletic traits of success (e.g., doubtful size/speed ratios given their position & our pro style schemes).

A.J. Johnson- LB -offered by Bama
Randolph- DB -offered by Florida
and Clear at TE is offered by Bama, Florida, Ole Miss, Arkansas, Auburn...........

I don't see your logic.

That's 2 commits out of 18; most of the others (except Worley & Kerbyson, for example) don't have good offer sheets. Hence, the problem.

The best approach for selling these kids has likely already been pitched to them by Kiffin.

I think you are depressed about the season. This season was going to be very hard for any coach the way we are playing 10 freshmen, walkons, sophmores. ,,,

We are taking our medicine this year for sure. But I think I am reasonable and have some common sense. My common sense tells me that CDD is getting in some quality players.

Get into the details on Rivals - the ratings details and you will see there is a gnats hair of difference between many of our players and those ranked one level up. Look at the times of the 40's, the power ratings, etc.

Is it safe to say that a lot of you guys who follow this a lot more closely than I do believe that Dooley is legitimately out-evaluating the other SEC coaches?

I must say, I get a warm-fuzzy to hear a lot of you champion this recruiting class.

I wouldnt take stock in anyone defending this class or any class. Its the same as people defending Dooley or even Fulmer. Some can see no wrong with anything UT and will spin this stuff anyway they can to make the sleep better at night.

Bottom line is they know very little if nothing more than whats on the pay sites or forums that anyone else will know. They dont work for the sites nor do they evaluate outside of youtube.

This class is not stacking up yet per what the PROFESSIONALS think. I will leave it to people who do it for a living. Thing is with them, if they gave everyone who is committed to UT 4 or 5 stars, they would be geniuses, but since they havent, they are slacking or not evaluating correctly.

I dont know of any fan base who is different. Everyone thinks their 2 stars and below are sleepers or underrated, its just a way of making peace with it.

I don't think that Dooley & the staff is out evaluating other SEC coaches, I do think that some of our current commitments are SEC caliber & will make great contributions at UT. Some of them could flame out & be 4 year backups, it all depends on how good are our coaches at developing these players once they get on campus. I have complete confidence in Heistand, Bagget, Smith, Thompson, & Chaney because their track records prove it.

Bottom line is that you can sign, say, the third best class in the country (Rivals 2007) but when 50+ percent of that class is gone a couple years down the road how good is that class really? I am willing to bet that 3 or 4 years down the road, you will have NOWHERE NEAR that amount of attrition from this class, which is what happens when you recruit high character kids who ARE happy just to have a chance to play for a school like Tennessee. Be happy with what you have, we are filling needs and the truth of the matter is.... it is pretty damn hard to pull down elite recruits when you are 2-5. I think we could have expected to turn a lot more heads if we were 4-3 right now, but we aren't.

I know Derek Dooley has recruited well in his other coaching stops. His ability to keep the mid-term enrollees and land some big recruits last year was phenomenal, but what is with all the three-star players committed?

Tennessee did close well last year and did a great job of closing on Justin Hunter, Eddrick Loften, Da'Rick Rogers and James Stone. However, this year hasn't been going as well. This is an average class at best for the Vols. But just when you start to count them out, they pull off a huge recruiting win with DeAnthony Arnett and this could be a sign of another strong finish.

I always have high expectations for Tennessee in recruiting. I still think the Vols should have more than just four four-star recruits out of 18 at this stage. They clearly need to close strong and Arnett is a great start. Otherwise they will find themselves outside the SEC's top six in recruiting for the first time since 2008 when they finished well outside the top 25.

They have to get Antonio Richardson, Cameron Clear, Maurice Couch and others down the stretch, and pull a few surprises, to stay in the top 25 and finish in the top half of the SEC. I just don't see this being as good as last year when a lot of the work was done by Lane Kiffin and Ed Orgeron.
- Rivals Mailbag.

- Rivals Mailbag.

I have trouble with figuring out the meaning, or relevence of statements liike these. My first impulse is to reply with "so", and then I realize it's a legitimate statement for its context.

But to correlate the thesis of this statement to the likelihood of winning football games in the SEC is taking a step outside of the intended message, and making many many many unfounded assumptions about the validity of rivals rankings, and the correlative relationships they may have with winning football games.

If we combine rivals rankings with BCS rankings, could we accurately predict the wins and losses of every team in the top 25 game by game?

Someone should write in and tell him that if his Rivals staff would get out there and do a better job evaluating prospects like Randolph and Kerbyson, then we would have more 4* prospects.

Wonder what happened to Texas & Florida this year?

So, yes, there must be other factors in having a top-ranked team. :)

Less than 3 months ago, the so-called experts (for example, USA Today) had the pre-season top 5 as follows:

1 - Alabama
2 - Ohio State
3 - Florida
4 - Texas
5 - Boise State

As of today, here is the current top 5 in USA Today:

1 - Oregon
2 - Boise State
3 - Oklahoma
4 - TCU
5 - Auburn

Now, if the experts can be this wrong in just a few months with the "knowledge" they supposedly possess about teams and their strengths, why do we think they possess a level of expertise that accurately predicts how kids who haven't even graduated from high school will pan out as college players? Don't you think it would be far easier to predict the outcome of this season less than 90 days ago than it would be to predict which of the high schoolers is going to be a NFL draft choice or an All-SEC performer in 2, 3, or 4 years? Really???

I can't think of anything in college football that is more of a crap shoot than rating a bunch of 17 & 18 year-olds before they have played a single down of college ball.

and in reverse, what's going on with Aubie, Utah, Boise St, TCU, Iowa, Stanford, how's Oregons recruiting rankings been? I'm sure none of these teams are performing to their recruiting ranking, or their BCS predicted performance. Analysis without really analyzing anything is fun.

Over time, yes, with certain ranges of accuracy. There are always upsets, but there's a reason why they're called upsets. This year has been mostly an anomaly more than most years, but, generally, talent predicts win rates, and the following three high school-based stats are pretty good (never a certainty though) at forecasting collegiate talent: the recruiting analysts' rating of a player; the offer sheets of a player; and the position-appropriate athletic/skill set of the player.
