From the viewpoint of your competition, whoever it is, won’t be Hendon Hooker, and that’s a good thing in our eyes. Whoever it is, can’t possibly be better. Did anyone here care who came after Wuerffel, Tebow or Trask? No, you were just happy as hell you didn’t have to deal with those guys again. Same applies here, Hooker has been phenomenal, steady, poised and smart. I’ll gladly take my chances against whoever is next.
I think that makes sense to a degree. But you also have to look at Heupel's history with QBs. You can't find a season when his QB wasn't ultra-productive, either while he was Head Coach or OC. Whoever wins the job will be a productive QB, in all likelihood. Another, better analogy might be when Shane Matthews departed, we thought things would get easier, but they didn't, because Spurrier was just going to produce QBs and offense.
The wild card is, will Tennessee's defense be better? It would be hard to be worse. If Tennessee can get the defense up to par, the QB doesn't have to be as good. I also think Tennessee will lean more heavily on the run next year with Sampson breaking out at RB.
