Agree on Jackson. He is more like Helton was for the 94 Vols. That said, Milton has not proven he can be a QB1. He has had multiple opportunities and 2 different universities. He did not look like a QB1 last night either when he had to come into the game other than mop up duty. I'm sure Milton will get the first opportunity as QB1 and will likely start the 1st game of the season. If he is still starting at the end of the season and is healthy, it likely means Nico is not the franchise QB we hope.
Except when we needed a first down on 4th. Hands it to the lightweight freshman back. Why he wasn't under center and pushing forward is a question for the play caller. He overthrew a few but didn’t look awful. I will say, if no one is open I like how he just barrels up the middle for 7-8 yards. He may not have the finesse footwork, but eventually you get tired of having to tackle someone so big.
Agree with all of that. I’d also point out that even when he “just” had Dean, Palmer, and Johnson, he still had a lot of success and they still put up big yardage. I believe all 3 either won an SEC championship or an East championship. But those Florida teams also played defense. That needs to be Tennessee’s next big step forward.
So this prompted me to do some research. Is it too early to fire a DC after 2 years? I remember Saban firing Kevin Steele after 1 year at Alabama and promoting Kirby. But since we were doing the Spurrier comps, I looked up his DCs by year:
1990: Jim Bates
1991-93: Ron Zook
1994-95: Bob Pruett
1996-98: Bob Stoops
1999-2001: Jon Hoke
Longest tenure was 3 years. He let go of Bates after 1 year (wonder if the 45-3 beating in Knoxville was the impetus for that?). After Bates, he had a string of good ones.
Bottom line, I don’t think making a DC change after this season is too early. The job is more attractive now. Go get it right this time.
I was taking to a former Tennessee player and a current coach about Milton. His reply was he has a lot of talent but he looks like he is trying to throw a marshmallow through a brick wall. To be successful, he has to learn how to throw a catchable ball. He has not yet shown he can do that. It looks like he may be the only scholar QB available to play against Vandy. Lets all hope he can lead our offense to a win in Nashville Saturday.10000000% Heupel isn't going to turn over the starting job to a true freshman when he has a former starter who backed up Hooker for 2 seasons and will be 3 offseasons into the install. Milton should have the job guaranteed going into next season. That was the case before Hooker's injury. Now Milton gets to have a jump start at it with a game vs Vandy and the bowl game.

History is history until it changes. There is no evidence that history has changed with Milton's passing game. I hope I am wrong, but we will be lucky to beat Vandy Saturday unless he has learned how to throw short passes that can be caught. He looks really good on the 50-60 yard throws but he has yet to throw short balls that can be caught. We will know by Saturday night and I hope we are a winner. He hasn't played meaningful snaps all season. Even last night he came in off the bench cold. There is zero reason to think that if Milton starts vs Vandy, we are getting the same Milton the Starter we had last year.
